We made a day visit as part of a fall foliage tour of the area. Though the Brainard Lake area is usually a fee area for day visitors as well as for campers (or the area is free but the access road is closed), today the road was open but the fee station unstaffed (we have a pass, anyway). This is not the best location for fall foliage, as most of the trees are evergreen. Nevertheless, the area is stunning, with wilderness areas just a hop away.

Brainard Lake is a great representation of the lakes in the Indian Peaks Wilderness, and the camping facilities match. There are plenty of good spaces for tents and Rv's. Water and electricity are available and all the facilities are handicap accessible, which makes a huge difference to me. Camping is close to the lake, but far enough away to make it seem secluded.
Fishing is fantastic for small brook trout and cutthroats using a fly and bubble. Evenings are the best time to catch fish, but a persistent angler will have no problems catching a limit.
