Colleagues wrinkled their noses when, as we entered the dining area, a couple of over zealous dogs broke loose (pets are welcome to stay here) and chased in through the doorless opening to the patio. We had been attracted by the exceptionally frugal prices on the menu and the obvious BEAUTY OF THE PLACE. The managers were exceptionally hospitable and eager to please us, going out of their way to make us comfortable and to correct problems (due to age and economic disasters) that caused us to wrinkle our noses.

Located about 5 miles of Walsenburg's town center on 160, Rio Cucharas Inn is one of the best-kept secrets we've encounters. Rustic and charming, done in adobe style with Southwestern decor, the rooms are clean, charmingly appointed and equipped with micro and fridge. Service at the front desk is gracious and accommodating, and the view of the Spanish Peaks/Sangre de Cristos at dawn is breathtaking. Includes Continental breakfast and free internet access in the breakfast room. HIGHLY RECOMMEND! We've traveled this way often and never checked it out -- we'll never stay anywhere else in Southern Colorado when on our way to our New Mexico second home.

I have stayed at tthis hotel off and on for 1 year. The rooms were always very clean. The staff very friendly. If I had a problem they fixed it as soon as I told them about it. Very quiet.
with outstanding views of the Spanish Peaks. They keep up grading rooms and the breakfast was just right.

We made the mistake of staying here one extremely hot summer night. The only room available had black soot on the ceiling from the corner fireplace, which of course, we didn't need to light that night because it had to have been 95 degrees in there. The air conditioner would run only for a few minutes each hour. When we complained to the clerk that it was way too hot in the room to sleep, there was, of course, nothing he could do about it. We were miserable. Even the flies were knocking on the windows to get out. Of course, the windows didn't open.
Just awful.

It looks like someone had great dreams at one time - long ago. We have spent a week and a half staying at various hotels and motels and this was the worst. I wish we could have gotten our money back, but like others, the price got our attention in the first place. Still, this place made me uneasy. What in the world happened? The nice, large, heated pool that needed a little bit of cleaning and the closed "fine dining and spirits" Club Rio restaurant area = seems someone had a wonderful vision of grandeur. Did it ever happen for the original owners? The paint was peeling, there were hairs in the tub, the water tasted a little funny, worn out blankets, dingy towels and washcloths, no wi-fi (as stated on website), dining closed, no laundry facilities (as stated on web),...etc. Seems an air freshener was sprayed heavily beforehand or something. The tv was about to go out with few channels anyway. the air conditioner was rather precariously off-center, like it may fall. Looked like water damage to the wooden ceiling... I don't know. It's kind of sad. The desk clerk was nice enough, but quoted an unreasonable price compared to the family in front of us who wanted adjoining rooms and had more kids- 4 (we only had two and one was under 1 and we only wanted one room) But in fairness due to a bit of protesting, he quoted us a cheaper rate. It's just sad. Does anyone know what happened?

We stayed at the Best Western Rambler (also remodeled) and drove past on our way to The Great Sand Dunes National Park. It looked VERY appealing and nothing like the photos. We had decided just with our drive by that we would stay there on our next visit. Anyone stayed there recently? Are all rooms remodeled? Is it complete? These are by far the only two motels near Walsenburg/La Veta even worth stepping foot into. On another note, Best Western Rambler was very nice. We stayed in the new addition (interior entrance) rooms, small but super clear, well appointed with mini frig and microwave. Also had indoor pool and spa, really nice complimentary breakfast with waffles and fresh made breakfast burritoes. Pricey for a Best Western but the only sure bet decent nights sleep near the Interstate. We look forward to returning and checking out Rio Cucharas, very encouraged to return now that we have two options in the area.

These other reviews turned us off on this motel, however, we called another motel and because they were full, they recommended Rio Cucharas Inn as they said it had been remodeled and looked really nice. We decided to try it and were pleasantly surprised! The manager was very friendly, well dressed and accommodating to our needs! We asked to see several rooms before checking in and were very pleased. The rooms were large and clean with new furnishings, refrigerator & microwave. The view from the room was fantastic. The indoor pool was huge, clean and warm (almost therapeutic), although it did need a new paint job and updating. We thoroughly enjoyed it!! The continental breakfast was adequate with several choices. For the price, it was a great bargain and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here. We would really recommend it!
