We've stayed at the Gramshammer for our Vail trips the past two years. We went with without shopping around, contrary to our usual practice. This was due to family having stayed there for years, and we wanted to be close to them. The general consensus is that it's gone downhill (no pun intended!). Not irreparably, but the level now is unacceptable at this price point, even in high season. Service and hospitality is at a bare minimum. The hosts seem to take for granted that their 28 rooms will be full and don't seem to believe in first rate service just for the pride of it. Every request was met with an unapologetic "no". We got the picture after a while and stopped asking. Do NOT accept the basic room - only available with two double beds and complimentary ear plugs to soften the drunkards' noise at 2:00 AM. The deluxe rooms are perfectly nice but, if a deluxe is not available, stay somewhere else! On the plus side, easy walk to the lift (reward for not sleeping), free internet (averaging out how outdated the rest of it is), free parking in the center of the village (just be patient about getting the car out). There's nothing irreversible about the Gramshammer's decline, but it will take some waking up by the owners or new ones for that matter. It's the first rate of 30 years ago. Replace the staff with some hospitality school graduates and gut the basic rooms - then you might have a $250 room. We'll be elsewhere next year.
