Of the four meals, one was good (the veal chop) and the other three were OK. The chocolate cake part of their black forest cake was pale, really bland and didn't even taste of chocolate.

Had entrees been in the $15-20 range we would have expected what we got, but when entrees are $30-$40, I expect more. Perhaps this is a wrong expectation in Vail.

The décor is dated and worn. Our server was inattentive; she did apologise for ignoring us and said she'd been teaching ski school for the past week. I still have nooooo idea why that made her unable to refill our drinks and forget to bring us our desserts, but I guess it was a good enough reason for her.

If the patio had been open or a band had been there, maybe this would have justified the extra cost, but alas, it was snowy and silent.

Alpenrose has very good (not great) food, good ambiance, fun waitstaff and really good desserts. Rarely plan to go there but seem to end up there at least once on every trip to Vail. Ate there last night when they had live bluegrass music going which we like. Good time had by all. Place has been the same for years. Negitives are the high prices for food and alcohol which is the main reason it's not a regular place for anyone. Also service can be spotty. Place has the feel of a family restaurant where family members as waitstaff are not expected to perform at a professional level but it's Ok because they are fun, funny, real, and sincere.

We were in Vail the first week they got snow in early December so when we decided to just walk through the Village on one of our first evenings in town, most of the restaurants were not exactly busy. Then we came upon Alpenrose. Modern jazz music was coming out of the outdoor speakers, and even though it was fairly loud, it was almost drowned out by the level of the laughter & conversation of the packed house. It turned out that it was "Brats & Beer Night"---a fundraising evening for a local snowboarder trying to make the next Winter Olympics team. The restaurant is know for having the best German/Bavarian food in town but since we went for the Bratwurst (the best I've ever had), I can't comment on the rest of their menu. The owners were on site and they and their staff made us feel like we were at their house for a private party. I bet you'll have a similar experience no matter when you visit.

We ate here on 1/17/2013 and reserved a table in the bar area for two people, since they were sold out with a large ski group from Tampa, Florida (yes, Florida). See my review of 12/22/11, the food and service were just as good as we remembered and we will always come here when in Vail. The owner and waitstaff are very friendly and you mingle with locals from the Ski Patrol to visitors from everywhere around the world. Keep up the traditional delicious German food the Valley has come to know and love!
