“Classic upscale Vail restaurant, but didn't live up to the hype”
Reviewed January 28, 2013

Six of us went to Sweet Basil with high expectations based on prior dinners and reputation. Obviously a high end institution, SB seated us promptly at 7:30 PM, waitstaff very solicitous and experienced. Lovely menu, wine list, and specialty cocktails, only thing not on the menu were oysters from the the two coasts of Canada. First courses included shrimp bisque, beet salad, Caesar salad, at $16 which seemed quite high, and my breaded sweetbreads over wild rice risotto which was very good. Three of us had seared ahi tuna which was judged to be good, not great at $34 per serving. The pork chop was said to be juicy and savory, but the tortellini mostly filled with spinach, little seafood, and relatively tasteless. As expected , the bill for the six of us was @ $500 including gratuity, but the consensus was that the meal was 7 on a 10 point scale. We were not entirely disappointed, expected better of a place with this much history and buildup.

“Resting on laurels?”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

Have eaten here since the early 1990's and they always have fine food, but not as tops as it used to be. $16 for a Caesar salad was annoying, higher than Boston or NY. Salad was small, entrees are good not great. Server was average. $185 for two with one glass of wine. simply overpriced

“Dinning in Vail at it's best”
Reviewed January 25, 2013

We were searching for a restaurant when a Vail local stopped to offer us directions. We told him we were looking for an upscale, fun restaurant with great food. Without hesitation he told us Sweet Basil had been one of his favorites for the past 10 years. We are so glad we took his advice. The atmosphere was upscale, modern and fun. The food was excellent. The service was a tad slow but not to the point of being annoying. Two of us ordered the venison, which I always fear as being gamey. This was not the case at Sweet Basil, it was prepared medium rare and served on a bed of celery root which complimented perfectly. Having been impressed by the meal we decided to share a few desserts. The unanimous decision was the Hot Sticky Toffee Pudding was our award winner. We nearly came to battles over the last bite. Vail has many excellent restaurants, Sweet Basil deserves to be in the list of places not to miss.

“Sweet Basil - Good all around”
Reviewed January 24, 2013 via mobile

We had one pleasant dinner at this restaurant. The food was very tasty and the service was impeccable. This place is very upscale as you'd expect from a place in Vail. The prices are compatible with this level of restaurant. You can expect to spend around $50/person not counting the wine. However, they have a vast wine list and it's hard to stay away...
