“Location is its Strong Point”
Reviewed February 26, 2013

I was so excited to be going to Vail during the ski season and staying at this property, but I can honestly say that there is nothing special about this hotel except its location. The valet and front desk service was excellent, and the rest of the experience was average at best. The property's design is a mix of hunting lodge and grandma's house, so it is confusing, uninspired, and not at all appealing. The room is a generous size, but it feels dark and dreary. Probably the weakest experience we had was in the dining room. On both mornings we were seated quickly, but after that....waiting. We had to get up to find someone and ask for coffee, and on one of the mornings, we didn't wait; we just went out into the waiting area and got a cup from their free coffee service for guests rather than wait for it to be brought to our table. On the first morning my husband ordered a fritatta and never received the fruit that goes with it. On the next morning, when it happened again (different server), it was just too much. I ordered 2 eggs a la carte and received a whole breakfast. When I explained that I purposely ordered a la carte because I can't eat the potatoes or toast, she STILL charged us for the full breakfast! And when we asked for the bill to be adjusted, she charged $7.50 for two eggs even though the menu says that one egg is $3.00. Truly this was the worst service experience I've had in some time and is an excellent example of servers truly not caring. There was simply no effort. I can only conclude that this is a property that knows they've got a fantastic location, and that's ALL they deliver.

This is a great (arguably overpriced) lodge in a perfect location and offering superb service and upscale amenities. I wouldn’t pay regular price for them though - $600+ for a hotel room (not counting service fees, parking etc) is overkill even for the best location, but they do make you feel pampered!

Location: Can’t ask for better! It’s about 2 min walk to the new gondola… and yes, that’s two minutes in ski gear. It’s also two blocks down from the main street and right across from the new Solaris complex so you’ll be right in the middle of Vail village.

Parking: Valet only and $25/night is an overkill in my opinion as it’s on top of their resort fee of $20/night. Very convenient, but way overpriced.

Rates / prices: We got advantage of Expedia’s “secret deals” and that is how we ended up in “The Lodge” for about the third of their regular price. Their resort fees did cover some of the things that we used (i.e. ski valet service and free newspaper every day), but I still think that mandatory $20/night is a rip off. We ordered breakfast in the morning once and while the food itself was under $30 (for two), which was reasonable for a very decent size breakfast (and it was delicious too), the total bill after all the additional fees that were added to it, which came as surprise, but I’m sure they were listed somewhere – we just didn’t look close enough – turned out to be over $40.

Rooms: Very spacious and had everything you could possibly need. Excellent sound insulation – we had a pool and two hot tubs right under our windows and we could not hear a thing from there. Keurig in the room was a very nice touch and they opted out of plastic water bottles in favor of reusable glass bottles with filtered water in the room. They didn’t cost anything and (probably included in the resort fees) and were refilled as needed. We also found very comfortable robes, slippers, dorm size refrigerator there and some other well thought of details. Bed was very comfortable as well.

Amenities / staff: Long list of amenities, which included free Internet, ski valet service – didn’t have to carry equipment to / from the slopes, twice-a-day housekeeping and some other things we didn’t use i.e. spa, pool, business center, etc. Staff was very knowledgeable and courteous. We were allowed early check in and late checkout and were able to store our luggage there for couple of hours after checkout as well.

All and all, if we get a good deal on that property again – we’ll definitely be back!

Room Tip: Try to stay on the first/second floors - elevators are slow and not always convenient

Did I say anything about the location! Great property right in the center of everything. The hotel itself is charming with a old european feeling. It seems a tad confusing with all the levels and stairs but you catch on after a day or so. The hot tubs and pools are wonderful. The live music by the fire pit on Saturday, smores, Elways restaurant. We had our 3 kids and it was so nice to just walk out the door and have great options for dinner other then the hotel. We loved it and want to stay again! I can't remember the last time I thought that of another hotel!

Grey hotel, primo location! The only reason I give it a four out five stars would be the service. The concierge was awesome, valet parking guys highly efficient - and the ski service at the foot of the mountain very good. The downside would be the girls at the front desk who seemed ill prepared/rough around the edges, and the waitstaff who were extremely abrupt. This would not be worth noting, however the Lodge is considered a 5 star hotel - and this is not the type of service I expect when I am paying top dollar, and stands out when you compare the Lodge with other hotels of this caliber. Otherwise, hot tub fab - nice, clean, luxurious rooms! Ski on!

Location - location - location! the best in Vail.
Hotel itself kind of confusing, lot of halls, different buildings and levels.
Main restaurant - Elway's overrated in my opinion.
Breakfast buffet abundant - service deplorable!
The worst was when the bkfast bill was presented: a mandatory "gratuity" charge of 20% as our table seated 6 persons! Also not clear as to what/why charges were imposed (bill varied from $17 to $75 per person although basically same breakfast was consumed).
At check-out (we were a party of 3 couples) hotel had forgotten to order transportation to Denver for German couple (arranged after quite a riff-raft). To top things off hotel padded the bill of the German couple by aprox $400. Later when I checked out the same thing happened... $430 dollars charge for breakfast with no receipt to back it up + charged for daily parking although I never had a car...
Fortunately they "removed" excess charges, however never apologized for their mistake - it seemed to be common business practice for them - very disappointing!

The Lodge is very conveniently situated steps from the new gondola which replaced the Vista Bahn chair at the end of Bridge Street. Guests are able to enjoy free ski storage along side at the mountin's base.
The location is Vail Village chock full of restaurants and shops.
The hotel accommodations are extremely nice and the housekeeping which includes turndown service is first rate. Service staff including the desk and concierge are extremely competent and friendly. There are facillities galore including a huge heated pool.
Breakfasts in the dining room are very good. Ordering from the menu or going to the egg chef for eggs made to order makes the most sense. The buffet price is very high and on entry if you just provide your name you will be charged for the buffet so tell the hostess you wish to order from the menu.
Espresso beverages in the dining room are quite good for some reason an espresso beverage ordered from room service is either made from a mix or tastes as if made from a highway gas station beverage station.

We returned to Vail for the second time and chose to stay at the Lodge at Vail again for a 12 day period. We were as pleased as the previous year and even maybe our experience was a little better this time though only because I probably utilised more of their facilities. We travelled with another couple this year and one of the party did not ski but enjoyed Vail immensely and the hotel's service contributed to this.
We were initially given a room that did not meet our expectations (mainly due to the configuration) and the hotel reception were very obliging in finding us an alternative room which was excellent. It was a studio overlooking the Pool area which is a lot quieter than the rooms/suites that overlook the street as the rubbish collection in the early mornings can intrude.
I think the general atmosphere of the Lodge is what makes us return to this hotel and the friendliness (it sort of hugs you) and its proximity to the ski slopes.
Our room was excellent and the kitchens provide you with everything you need if you wanted to stay in and cook a meal - oven, stove top, microwave, dishwasher and large refridgerator and coffee making. They provide you with coffee and tea daily.
The room service is very good and there are the usual paper delivery of your choice. We have had a wood fireplace in both of the studio rooms we have stayed in and restocking of wood and any other amenities you may need is provided promptly.
The hotels spa is amazing! The complementary Steam room and Sauna and indoor hot tub are wonderful after a day of skiing and the staff are so pleasant. The facilities include a lovely shower room as well where every thing is available for you use.
We love staying at The Lodge and will be returning again probably next year.
Just a comment which reflects the service in the hotel. Our friends had a few maintenance issues with their room at different times and each one was attended to promptly and rectified and the general courtesy of the staff has to be mentioned.
The hotel recognised that there had been a few issues and they placed 2 boxes of chocolates in the refridgerator which was much appreciated.

Room Tip: Each of the rooms/studios are privately owned so the decor and facilities differ. We have stayed in...
