Just to provide some background, i run 3-4x a week (not far or fast) and was visiting CO. The hike was really beautiful - we did the 2 miles to the waterfall (2 miles each way). The hike out is mostly uphill - hard for people not used to altitude. Nothing too technically challenging - just hills. Once at the waterfall it is pretty easy to climb down to it and hike around. Walk back was way easier (unless maybe you have knee problems). Only overall challenge is the parking lot - only maybe 12 spots and no where else to park (at least that we found).

There are many tough and steep trails in the Vail Valley, so you have to be careful when you see the term "intermediate". This is often applied by locals and people who either hike for a living, or hike very frequently. I have been burned several times on hikes labeled as intermediate, which turned out to be thigh and lung burners. So I'm happy to say that this one is truly an intermediate hike. Except for a fairly steep but short climb at the beginning, most of the hike to Booth Falls has a moderate grade and isn't that difficult (I'm a flatlander from the East Coast who only hikes occasionally). There is nicely varied terrain--meadows, some forest trails, stream crossings. Views are really lovely, and the falls are great. A good hike for people who like a decent workout, but don't want to pass out from exertion on the way.

When I "finally" got to the falls, it was well worth the effort. The trail is famous, therefore busy with lots of friendly people.
At my level of expertise, I considered it strenuous not moderate as it is advertised. Another free activity in Vail.

I've done this trail a couple times but I've unfortunately never made it to the lake! But I do love the serenity of this trail with all this little side trails running to the river and to beautiful views of the ridge! I always feel so far away from the troubles and stresses of work and life! Recommend a wind breaker because it can get shady and windy near the falls. My dogs loves the trail so he can race up and down the path and chase ptarmigans!

I hiked to the falls and back in about 2.5-3 hours including stops for pictures. It was a little steep at times but nothing impossible, as long as you are in decent shape. Amazing views!
