The Telluride Historic Museum is located in an historic building up the hill from main street. I thought it was smaller, so didn't realize how much time I would spend. Nicely done, with a lot of mining history. Great spot to learn about how hard life was way back whennnnn.

We did a "walk around" tour that was sponsor through the museum and as part of the package it included admission to the museum itself. The "walk around" tour of the town was excellent and very informative. If you do the "walk around" tour do not miss taking advantage of going through the museum. My hats off to whomever put this place together. An amazing group of items to look at...extremely interesting...well worth your time.

I think that having knowledge about the past history of where you're vacationing just makes your experience that much more special. I think the museum should be near the top of your itinerary.

If you know nothing about the history of the area you can learn a lot here in a few minutes. Great display of actual mining equipment, household goods, historical artifacts and a few videos.

The town does have a great history and puts it in great perspective.

I am history buff, and this is one of the best small-town museums I've visited anywhere. There is detailed information on the history of the Ute Indians and their displacement from the area. You'll learn more about the geology of the region and the mining heritage. My favorite part: discovering that Telluride was a player in the War of Currents (late 1800s) between Edison and Westinghouse. Did you know that Telluride was the first town in the world to have electric lights powered by alternating current?

The kids can enjoy a "panning" experience right outside the building. For $6, you can purchase some dirt that has been "infused" with mineral and fossil samples. Above the sluice box is a picture of 40 mineral types and 35(?) fossil types that can be found in the dirt. When we arrived, one mom said her child had been collecting specimens for two hours. My daughter found amethyst, citrine, and more. A couple of kids from other families found arrowheads! Great entertainment.
