Another great restaurant in Telluride; quaint definitely captures a French atmosphere.

I first dined at La Marmotte nearly 15 years ago; the focus was on dinner only and fine dining. The current owners have included lighter fare items, a nice selection of wines by the glass and extended lunch hours until late in the afternoon. The outdoor seating and occasional live music are also nice additions!

After enjoying a meal here last year, we had two dinners and one lunch at La Marmotte a couple weeks ago, and were very satisfied. On all occasions we dined outside; the weather was unusually warm during a warm season, but heaters are provided for outdoor seating on colder evenings. Outdoor service involves an eclectic array of furniture ranging from standard tables, to couches, to high bar-type chairs...some are grouped under a large, tarantula-shaped awning. (Winter weather must drive folks into the interior restaurant, which looks cozy and comfortable.) Our lunch was presumably an exception, during a festival, with wonderful live music. Mainly the restaurant just serves a 3-course prix fixe dinner menu of appetizer, main course, and dessert, although we understand that they will provide dishes a la carte, as well.
The menu constantly changes. The prix fixe dinner is $49, but about half the offerings involve a supplement (typically $5 or $10). For a $6 supplement, your dessert can be accompanied by one of various interesting after-dinner drinks. Dishes commonly include a good risotto (e.g. my roasted quail appetizer on the first night and my lamb shank on the second). My squid-stuffed-shrimp appetizer was delicious and my wife was very happy with her scallops. The desserts we sampled were excellent. An extra on our second evening was a la carte oysters to start the meal.
Service was not swift but it was adequately attentive and professional. Dining outside afforded good views of the mountains, including the gondola which arrives and departs Telluride about two blocks from La Marmotte.

We've been four times over the past year, three at lunch on the patio and once inside in the evening. We've never had a bad meal or a rude waiter. There are always a few locals chatting with old friends who pass by, and a lot of tourists straight off the gondola. The waiters are helpful, live music is frequently playing, and my wife and I find it romantic and fun. She loves the lunchtime lobster roll, and I"ve sampled salads and steak and never had anything that was not well prepared. I don't always appreciate a fine fussy French place but La Marmotte has never been that way on our visits and it's now our special tradition to go there when in Telluride.
