Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort & Spa
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed June 18, 2013

I recently stayed at Devil's Thumb Ranch Resort and Spa and it was the most incredible experience! From the fantastic horseback riding adventure, zip line tour, poolside relaxation, first class spa massage and even the coconut and lemon cookies in my room at turn-down service; this resort deserves 5 stars and beyond. I am very impressed with the friendly and helpful staff members who were always there to answer any questions that arose during my stay. I have stayed at many 5 star resorts in my day and I was blown away by Devil's Thumb Ranch. I will definitely be returning again and again; as well as suggesting to my company that we hold a corporate retreat here later this year.

Room Tip: Take advantage of the Spa and all of the activities that this resort offers!

For the second year in a row, we hosted 80 guests at Devil's Thumb for an Annual Customer Meeting with a variety of guests from several states. We were greeted months in advance with prompt coordinators that maintained our event in fine detail. The event practically planned itself thanks to Thad, Kevin and Shelly, our group reservation specialist.

Our guests were thrilled with the sight of the meadows and views and the complimentary turn-down service each evening. We also had a lot of great feedback on the hotel's eco-friendly and paraben-free bath items, fruit-infused water stations throughout the hotel and cordial staff. All rooms were prepared and ready for our arrival.

Our guests participated in a variety of activities: golf (at nearby Pole Creek Golf Course), fly fishing, horseback riding and spa treatments. All were enjoyable, both fly fishing and horseback riding groups saw large wildlife and enjoyed many catches on the pond/river. The activity staff offered excellent training to our new fisherman and guided well on the trails.

The restaurant and bar service team were great and rapid with replacing drinks and clearing plates. The fire pit is wonderful- a staff member even thought to bring out a basket with ingredients to make s'mores- a huge hit!

We hosted our meeting in the Broad Axe Barn and all tables were set and ready hours before start time. Much appreciated!

We just loved every moment at the Ranch, your staff is beyond hospitable! My deepest thanks to your wranglers (valet) for helping load and unload heavy boxes and coolers. You were all a joy to work with and shout out to Jennie in the spa for a fantastic massage.

Room Tip: All rooms are quiet and comfortable. Most first floor rooms have exterior space, which is lovely.

Booked a meadow view lodge room. A few days later, decided to upgrade to a mountain view with a porch. Unfortunately, we were quite disappointed with the view from our room #120. The room was tucked behind the restaurant and mostly had a view of a rock wall (and some fuel canisters for the grill). Returned to front desk to request a different room, but they were sold out. Wished we hadn't wasted the money on the upgrade.

Otherwise, the room was lovely. Very spacious with a large comfy king bed. The bath tub was luxurious. The turn-down service included delicious lemon zest cookies. Very clean.

The grounds and pool were wonderful. Went for a run and a hike on the trails. Enjoyed the large hot tub and swimming pool. Had breakfast on the patio and sat around the fire pit in the evening.

I would agree with some of the comments that the property is widely used for groups and weddings. We were attending a wedding on Sunday evening, and there was one Saturday evening and Sunday afternoon. I can see how the large groups could detract from people staying on property that are not part of an event. The wedding parties eventually spill over to the bar and patio area late in the evening. And might create noise in the hallways.

I'd recommend staying in the lodge, easy access to all the amenities. The bunkhouse is far enough away that you must drive, not walk. The cabins are walkable, but most people seemed to drive.

Overall we enjoyed our experience other than the room's view disappointment. Lodge is definitely on the pricey end of the spectrum.

Room Tip: Choose Lodge Rooms for easiest access to facilities. Most Meadow View Rooms look at or over a parki...

My now husband and I were engaged at Devil's Thumb Ranch the summer of 2012, so it only seemed right to plan our wedding there that winter. We got married in January of 2013 and it was truly all we could have imagined and more. We were grateful for all the care and consideration given to us by Lindsay Johnson and Stacy Horn in wedding services.

With both my husband and I having family and friends traveling in from all over the country it was important to give them a taste of what we loved so much about Colorado. Beyond the perfect amount of snow, sunshine, views, and charm of Tabernash, Devil's Thumb really is the perfect blend of class and authenticity. There is nothing more inviting than the grandeur of a wooded barn and fireplace, coupled with fabulous drink, food, and service. We are still getting compliments from our guests about the hospitality and care that they experienced at Devil's Thumb.

When planning a wedding, it is important to feel like you can speak honestly and openly with the individuals you are coordinating with. Stacy and Lindsay both showed the highest professionalism, while at the same time a genuine sense of humor and understanding for all the sensitive issues that arise in when planning an important event. They never seemed too bothered or busy to answer our endless questions and concerns.

I would recommend Devil's Thumb to anyone planning a wedding. We were grateful to have a place that our guests could come and settle in for a winter get-a-way. When people come so far you want to give them a real experience, Devil's Thumb is that. We will certainly be back to visit for many years to come!

K.C.

We had our wedding at the ranch in February. Not only did the weather conspire to make it the winter wonderland that we were hoping for, but the entire staff at Devil's Thumb made every step of the planning easy, joyful and special, which all translated into the best "big day." Our large party filled up nearly the entire lodge and all the cabins for a 3 night/4 day celebration. We asked for a lot from the entire staff in order to create the wedding weekend we envisioned, and all of our crazy ideas were greeted with a we-can-make-that-happen kind of attitude; from our wedding coordinator to the stable managers to the spa, servers and chefs, and the activities center. We had the most perfect experience, as did our families. And every single one of our guests was impressed with the beauty of the place, the food, the activities....and they're all still talking about it!

We came to Devils Thumb Ranch from Estes Park for a zip lining tour. The getting-there started out rocky because we planned on taking the Trail Ridge Road from Estes Park and it would have been a 2 hour drive versus the 3 1/2 hour drive going back to Denver and around the mountains. They JUST opened the road the day before so we assumed it would be open the next morning to make the 11am reservation (we had originally booked a 1pm reservation but they called the week of to tell us there's a 3 person minimum and we'd either have to cancel or move to another tour time thus the 11am tour time). The RMNP didn't open the road till 9 so we wouldn't be able to make our 10:30 check in time. I was so bummed since it's non-refundable but we kept driving and made it to Grand Lake at which point I got a phone call from Devil's Thumb asking if we would be making it, luckily we were able to attach onto a 1pm tour after all and it all worked out!

The Ranch is very upscale seeming! Beautiful views! We did have lunch at their main restaurant and the food and deck were great! Made me want to stay here sometime! I'll have to look into what else is around there cause the Ranch seems in the middle of nowhere however, it does seem to have all the amenities one would need! The zip ling was very fun and the guides Doug and Casey were great and informative! I was bummed to see that 60% of the trees were dead from a pine beetle apparently but the grounds are still beautiful!

We spent a few days here with our daughter and son-in-law. Our daughter had been here on a couple of business retreats. It is a spectacular facility in a picture-perfect setting. For business or pleasure they have all the amenities: riding, spa, pool, fitness center, sporting goods store. Very nice restaurants, excellent food, super wine list. One night we organized, for ourselves, a tasting from the extensive whiskey list. The barman/sommelier was great. We also rode one day, which was fun, but it was very early spring in the Rockies and things were pretty cold and damp. There are a wide variety of lodgings. We had a two-bedroom cabin, which was very comfortable.
