Rabbit Ears Motel

Visited Steamboat over December for a 5 day ski trip. We chose the Rabbit Ears because of the price. It was affordable, on the free city bus line, and within walking distance to great downtown shops and restaurants. I honestly thought the hotel couldn't have been that nice for the price, but we were pleasantly surprised upon arrival.

The room was extremely clean, maintained very well every day by the maid, had a great balcony and view, and even included a microwave and refrigerator! It was quiet at night and only a few blocks away from great downtown spots. Highly recommend Bistro CV for a nice, little-more-than-casual dinner. We will definitely come back to this hotel!

They also provide a continental breakfast which mainly breads. It would be milk, OJ, coffee, bagels, prepackaged waffles, english muffins, toast, cereal, yogurt, and oranges. Considering we were going skiing after breakfast every morning, the breakfast was somewhat lacking. We need more protein such as eggs and meat to prepare us better, but you can't really complain for a free continental breakfast.

Also, this is definitely an "older person" hotel. My boyfriend and I are in our late 20's, but when we checked in, the older lady scolded us and said we'd "be in a lot of trouble if we had a party." A party? Really? Do we look like we're 16? But she was friendly and pleasant other than that.

Room Tip: Rooms on the 2nd floor have a nice balcony. Rooms facing the back overlook the river and mountain.

I’m surprised this place isn't rated higher!

Rabbit Ears is affordable, quiet, clean, and comfortable within a short walking distance of town. The Ski House, snowmobiling tour, skiing, and snow tubing companies all picked up at the lobby. Our room had the most beautiful view of the river.

Don’t lump Rabbit Ears in with negative stereotypes associated with motels. This place is kitschy fun!

My husband and I stayed at the Rabbit Ears on a Friday night in late Sept. 2011. We stayed in the building closest to the river on the second floor. Nice to open your sliding glass doors and hear the river rushing by; however, even though the rooms are nonsmoking, the hotel allows people to smoke on the balconies. I was trying to read on the balcony and was surrounded by smoke. People next to me, and down below smoking on their balcony and all the smoke came right onto our balcony and into our room. When I first entered the room, I thought it smelled a little like cigarete smoke, but thought I was just mistaken. Now I know why, people don't smoke in the rooms (nonsmoking); however, they go out on the balcony with the sliding doors open and the smoke comes right into the rooms for the next guest to have to smell. My allergies did not do well. So keep doors and windows closed.
The rooms were clean; however, a little dated and dark. Decent light breakfast. Nice, friendly staff. Probably wouldn't stay here again because of the smoking problem. Also saw numerous large dogs on property, so a dog friendly motel. However, if you have allergies to dogs, you might not want to stay here either unless they have nondog rooms available.

Room Tip: Rooms along the river are nice. They are a little more money, but nice to hear the river.

We were a little unsure how this would turn out due to the age of the motel. We were blown away and overly impressed with the upkeep they have done to keep it modern.
The beds were excellent, the rooms were so nice and super clean that we were surprised at the cost.... Very reasonable ! We loved the location right on the river with easy access to a walking path for your furry family to stroll. The front desk ladies were super friendly, and helped with great suggestions on where to go for different activities. The always greeted us with such sunny personalities. Thank you Thank you Thank you !! We will be spreading the word on how great everything was !! Look forward to returning for skiing.

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms with balcony overlooking the river !! You wont regret it !

My first encounter with the office staff was sort of odd, because I didn't know if they were being rude or were simply trained to be western tough. As it turned out they were fine, but there was nothing like Four Seasons service. They were prepared to give us a room overlooking a busy road into town but after a little arm twisting we were able to get a room on the river. Best part of place is the sign and location right on one end of downtown Steamboat Springs. Free breakfast which is basic but fine. Laundry room closes at 9 so pay attention to when you put clothes in the dryer. Pretty laid back. There was a beerfest right outside our room, but they were quiet at night and we had no trouble sleeping. If you're going to stay in downtown Steamboat, this is a pretty good place. You can stay on the mountain in the summer but it's pretty dead up there.

On our recent trip, we tried to avoid the chain motels seeking something unique. The Rabbit Ears Motel was just what we wanted. The room was large and comfortable and overlooked the river. The location was very convenient allowing us to walk downtown.

Room Tip: Request room in lower building along the river

We normally stay with medium to world class hotel properties, or very nice B&B's: very comfortable beds; clean quiet rooms; and convenient locations are always most important. Planning our first visit to Steamboat Springs and after reading the reviews and booking a room for three nights in late July - we had mixed expectations (I tend to be critical about accommodations). We loved everything about it - very happy there the entire time. Our room was large with two comfortable queen beds, a large LCD TV, microwave, refrigerator, drip coffee maker, and a dinning table for two. The bathroom was tiny (you can turn around after closing the door) but clean and in good condition, and plenty of thirsty towels. Never disturbed despite our unpredictable comings and goings: the beds were made and the room tidied up daily. We selected a room with a private balcony (w/two chairs) overlooking the Yampa river where we were delighted to be able to sit & read, chat, hear birds singing, watch rafters/tubers and occasional fly fishermen during the day from our well shaded vantage point. (To view the river over the enclosed railing you will have to stand). The motel located on the edge of the downtown area is an easy walk to all attractions. There is a small shaded & grassy park adjacent to the motel on the river w/a few picnic tables, benches and access to the river. Old Town Hot Springs directly across the street (again I had dubious expectations but it was excellent - don't miss - recommend an early morning visit: take a book and get your discount entry ticket, $10 at the motel office), botanical gardens (also excellent), restaurants (many to choose from), great shopping, wide paved walking/bike path along the river, pro rodeo, etc. Rooms have AC (only used it once for a few hours the first day until realizing we didn't need it). The cool mountain nights made for excellent sleeping even in late July when daytime temps were in the mid 80's to low 90's. So make sure you pack something to keep you warm if you are out much past sundown. If you don't like the idea of listening to the constant sound of the river (which can sound like an AC running), pick a room that isn't on the river. The room comes with a free basic continental breakfast. We hope to visit Steamboat again in the fall and will happily book our stay at the Rabbit Ears Motel. Highly recommended.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
Luxury night's sleep minus the luxury price. The Rabbit Ears Motel, located in beautiful Steamboat Springs, Colorado, is your choice for comfortable, affordable lodging right in the center of downtown. Either they built Steamboat around our motel, or our motel was conveniently built in the center of all the action. So, both ways, you know that all the activities and nightlife the valley provides are in close proximity. Choose a weekend get-away for the family, or stay with us the whole week. World-class skiing with slope-side ski-in, ski-out convenience is expensive and overrated. Our motel is right on the main street and just a 5 minutes' bus ride to the gondola and the base of the ski area. Oh, and the bus is free. Lastly, all our guests are welcome to get reduced-priced Old Town Hot Springs passes for our recreation center, just across the street. ... more   less
