The town and the hotel reminded me of a little European village. I would not recommend the hotel for families, but it's absolutely great for one or two people. I stayed with my husband last week, it was perfect: clean, quiet, and cozy. The staff here was also THE nicest staff I have ever experienced. They made our stay just that much nicer!

My ski buddy and I booked a week at the Bristol in February and were so very glad we decided to stay in town instead of near the slopes. The amazing Steamboat ski shuttle bus stops a few yards from the hotel every 10 minutes, so a car is completely unnecessary. Downtown Steamboat is cute and lively.....lots of good restaurants, coffee houses, one of the best bookstore/cafes I know of anywhere (Off the Beaten Track Books), live music and good shopping. It was all just outside our door. The staff at the Bristol were extremely nice and helpful. Our room was small but had a great old west atmosphere, with Indian blankets, rustic furniture, etc. Coffee and tea are available 24/7. The hot tub is just what you need after a day on the slopes. A living room with fireplace, comfortable furniture, books and newspapers, is a cozy place to meet other guests as well as to catch up on your email. HIGHLY recommended! (A trip to Strawberry hot springs is also highly recommended.)

We decided at the last moment to head to Steamboat for a family vacation between Christmas and New Years. A call to Steamboat Central Reservations got us the suggestion of the Hotel Bristol, the price was OK, the reviews were reasonable, so we took it.
Big mistake, at least for us. If you're the ones who party till late, and like the noise, it a good place. Clean, good location. But if you actually want to sleep and get up at sunrise to do things, you are out of luck. The inner walls are paper thin. Go to bed at 9, and listen to other folks' TVs, toilets flushing, showers runnings, telephones ringing. People continuously walking up and down the halls, and CLEARLY listen to their conversation for several seconds as they approached and receded. There is a hot tub upstairs, and I guess in ski season this is a party hotel. Our son got to listen to the dishes banging around in the kitchen of the restaurant downstairs.
At ten o'clock, the music started up. It was just loud enough to really be heard, and from the thumping bass, it was a sound system with some power. After an hour of it, I went looking, looked outside, walked the halls some, it was loudest in our room! It would go till midnight, no problem.
By the third night, I had finally figured out where it was coming from. The restaurant in the basement had a live band, rock'n'rollers, and that was that. By the fourth night they were turning it up louder, and I got to sing along. Great.
Perhaps if one gets a room in the back of the second floor, or doesn't mind wearing earplugs, or just wants to join the party, it'll work. But we weren't pleased.
Just to let folks know.

We booked the Bristol because of the very good TripAdvisor reviews and location in the center of town.
The location is very good, close to everything, but the hotel itself is only fair. The rooms are very small, the hallway even smaller. The rooms look over a parking lot, or the next building. The place is clean and neat, but there's no particular character to it. I'm just not sure why this is a better choice than a motel.

A fine choice, if you don't mind older hotels. While there is no elevator and the room was quite small, it was very clean, the bed was comfortable, and I liked the convenience of being right in the heart of "downtown" Steamboat. The staff person was very helpful, and provided good directions on how to find the hot springs (check those out!)
