These falls are so beautiful and just a short ten minute drive from town. Definitely worth the time, but you might want to visit in the late afternoon or very early morning, when the crowds are not so heavy. Parking costs $5.

Arrive early to get parking space near trail head. Short hike down to river offers great view of lower falls. Hike to upper falls is mostly up, good footware required.

Fish Creek Falls is a beautiful, strenuous hike if you hike up to the upper falls. You can also stick to the lower area, which is great for families. My husband and I hiked up to the upper falls, leaving the trailhead around 9 in the morning. A few pieces of advice - take $5 cash or a check with you as the trail has a parking fee and no change box or ranger station to get change. Second, the falls is a popular hike and gets busier later in the morning. On our way up, we were relatively alone, passing only a few hikers. On the way down, however, the trail was packed. If you enjoy solitary hikes, this one is not for you unless you go early in the morning. Gorgeous hike, though, and well worth it.

Other than the really crabby lady who was working to take the parking fees at the parking lot, this is one of my favorite locations in Steamboat Springs. Wear good hiking shoes because the path is gravel / dirt and at an incline. Typically, when we hike down to the falls, we kick off our shoes and soak our feet in the river while sitting on the sun-warmed rocks. However, this year, it was very cold and the water levels were so high that there was no way we were going to get wet. It's still a fabulous place for photos, and something I'd recommend.

We visit Steamboat every summer and use this as our warm-up hike. I believe the hike is about two miles long to the first falls. The beginning of the trail is probably the most steep and many people become discouraged and turn around. You do need to wear some decent tennis shoes or hikers and carry some water because even though this hike is only four miles round trip you do cover some elevation. The top of the climb becomes rocky and then you turn the corner and you find yourself looking at the falls. People do need to be cautious, because the water does move very swiftly and people have died by being swept away. It's beautiful up there and the trail head is very close to downtown Steamboat.
