We stayed in one of the townhomes and really enjoyed all that it had to offer. The unit was well appointed and well thought out. We had a four bedroom 3 1/2 bath with ten people total including small children. The kitchen was stocked with more than enough plates/glassess/silverware, plenty of bowls/pots/pans with full granite counters and bar. The fridge was full size with ice/water in the door, gas stove, dishwasher, double sinks, under counter lighting and even a large electric griddle, coffee maker with separate burr grinder and blender. As the property does not have an on-site restaraunt we did all breakfasts in the unit with no troubles at all. They provided a sponge, dishwashing liquid & dishwasher detergent. There is also washer/dryer in the unit, always helpful with kids.
The streets on the property are heated so there is no snow on them to worry about, this also holds true for the walkays and driveway for the unit itself so no shovelling or sliding. The garage is even heated with its own thermastat, great to thaw the car out or to get all the gear in order. Walking into the unit there is a good size tile area (8x10 ish) with heated floors, a bench to take off/on boots with lots of cubbies for them or hats/gloves/scarfs. In addition to the coat closet & cubbies in the entrance they provide lots of hooks for all the coats etc.. There were two back decks (both small but reasonably sized) and a grill hooked up to the houses natural gas, great view of the mountain and valley from out back too.
All the furniture was very nice for a rental and done in a natural slightly western look & wooden floors thrughout the main floor. Our unit had TV's in the bedrooms that were all flatscreens and about 32" (more than enough) with a slightly larger one in the downstairs den and a big screen in the living room (48"-52" ish) and DVD / surround sound system. Bathrooms were very nice with nicely tiled glassed in showers (with bench/seat) and all granite counters. There were two rooms with private bathrooms and the main 'master' also had a seperate toilet room and two person whirlpool bath. Our unit also had some decorative large candles for use, playing cards (3 sets), dominos and several other games. The cleaning crew was very good and were on an every other day schedule, good for a condo. There was a big trash & recyclng in the garage to take out any kitchen items and the garbage service had the code to make the pickup.
I cannot say enough about the shuttle services that they offer. They run to/from the gondola every 10 minutes during the day and pickup/drop you at your front door, the ride is only a few minutes. They also run you into town, grocery stores or anywhere else on separate shuttles that run every half hour. In the evening the shuttles to town run more frequently and they do pickups in town every 7-10 mins. The drivers are all great with good reccomendations and again, they will drop you just about anywhere you want, while I don't think they are allowed to actually stop/drop on the main street they will pull into parking lots or the closest side street. The two grocery stores are a city mart (?) next to the wal mart and a safeway with all shuttles stopping at the city mart. They are lacking nothing at either.
The property itself is almost caddy corner to the gondola square and only a little over a hundred yards or so from the lodge, there are sidwalks that are reasonably clear of snow. We used the Bins in the one of the rental shops for the whole time, they are $4 a day/night and you can store your boots/helmets/goggles or anything else for the day and/or night, it is the same for overnight ski/board storage. While this is not neccessary it was really nice not carrying anything around the whole time. We were able to run to town for a bite, wearing our ski attire with snow boots then get dropped at the gondola, change into ski/board boots, pickup our skis and go. Also convenient to grab a bite or drink afterwards, much more comfortable being able to where snow boots to walk around.
There is plenty of fast food and do not seem to be lacking any major brands, however, they also have plenty of local establishments as well. We were not able to try everything of course but did not run across anything we did not like. There are also lot's of watering holes in town so no concerns of getting bored. We did see a dominos pizza but were told of another local delivery with good pies (soda creek), though with all the options we did not try them out. There are many options for restaraunts around the gondola as well and I believe a few places with live music in the evenings. Between the gondola area and downtown there are plenty of stores to cater to any needs, countless ski equipment stores as well as every other type of shop one could desire.
Many of the areas (downtown & ski area) have heated walkays to keep snow/ice off and those that do not are pretty good about keeping them well shovelled/scraped making it easy to stroll around (even with a stroller). They do have a movie theatre downtown and though I did not check for myself I was told that they have tubing on Howslens Hill (sp?), the separate ski area in downtown.
Arriving in Steamboat/Hayden airport be aware that they do not offer traditional taxi services. We found there to be no need for a car once you arrive at the property and there are two shuttle service for the 25 min ride, Storm Mountain & Go Alpine. The prices are the same (may be govt controlled?) and both seem to offer their own online speciales, we did the discount for online advance roundtrip with Storm Mountain. They are very helpful with the luggage, informative on the drive and offered some candy to us all (snickers/reeses etc). The service is door to door and you need to call them 2 days before departure to get the pickup time. Our pickup was a 30 minute window and they hit it with five minutes to spare. I found the price to be a little high as they charge per person, with several people it really adds up quick, but it is still a lot less (trouble & time) than getting a car/suv and with ski racks & lugging everything around.
The mountain itself is fantastic with plenty for all levels to enjoy. They have green runs starting at the very top of the mountain. Hope this helps.....Enjoy.
