“Great location on the slopes, but the rest was so-so”
Reviewed March 6, 2014

The Westin Snowmass has a great location on the slopes and is in walking distance of lots of restaurants and shops. The lobby is really impressive with a great view of the mountains and our room was modern and stylish. But overall, I must say, I wasn't massively impressed with this hotel.

When we arrived to check in, no one came to help us with our bags. Check-in took an inordinately long time, despite us being the only people checking in. And the hotel is rather like a rabbit warren, with surprisingly low ceilings, so as soon as you leave the lobby area, the hotel feels rather like a 1970s motel with long, low corridors with no natural light. Our room looked great, but it was about 10 degrees too hot and no amount of playing around with the thermostat could get the temperature down (and the windows only open a few centimetres). Check-out was extremely slow as only one person was on the front desk, despite a long line of people to be seen. And when I checked out I was told the total bill, but not shown a breakdown of the costs. I was in a rush, so didn't check the bill (my mistake, I admit), but when I later looked at an emailed copy, there was an erroneous in-room dining charge added to my bill.

In isolation all these are very small things. But they all add up.

Overall I still think this is a reasonably good hotel, mainly down to the fantastic ski-in ski-out location. But would I rush to go back? Probably not.

Hello there, and thank you for choosing to stay with us and providing us feedback on your recent experience. It is a fantastic location and we are happy that you enjoyed this feature of the property. We are sorry though for the parts of your stay that did not meet your expectation. As a guest you should not have to wait in lines for check-in/out with no assistance or acknowledgment from our associates. The thermostat should have been working properly to cool your room, so that you were not as uncomfortable. In addition, we do work to try and ensure that all guests are only charged for services they received. We apologize that the IRD charge was posted to your account. Your feedback has been shared with key Operations departments to help us improve upon the experiences that we are providing. Thank you and we hope to have you here again as our guest.

Pros: Located on the snow in the midtown Village Mall section of Snowmass village
Gear rental & ski valet below hotel - accessible via lift
Ski down to the Village Express chairlift. Sky Cab gondola back up to the hotel from Base Village.
Easy access to drop the kids off to ski school and fast access to Village Expres Chairlift.
Great fresh food - breakfast & lunch great quality with wide variety
Breakfast area has a great view of the front valley ski field
Good if you can get a food/resort credit in your package.
Great friendly people that go out of their way to help.
Free airport transfer
Great outdoor heated pool/spa - great for apres ski.

Cons: Pricey food - but hey its Aspen Snowmass!
Deluxe rooms still quiet small and can feel somewhat claustrophobic if you don't like dark interiors.
Small bathroom with small vanity/sink.
Water pressure can be suspect on occassions - especially given the over sized shower head
Resort fee is payable per day (covers some of the "free" things I guess)
House keeping didn't really clean the room - eg, they didn't seem to vacuum the bathroom floor during our stay - noticeable when you have a wife who loves to wash her hair nearly daily!

Room Tip: Level 4 rooms away from the lift were quiet. Stay away from Level 2/3 where some rooms face the lobb...

This is one of the best hotels I've ever stayed in. The resort is very well organized--from the desk staff who really care about the customers' comfort and well being (kudos to Zach) to the restaurant (very yummy omelet) to the ski valet (top flight). I hope to return there soon for another ski vacation and relaxing visit. If you can't or don't want to walk far, stay out of the Alpine wing. To get there you have to use two elevators and walk a good distance to get from the lobby/restaurant to your room.

Room Tip: I stayed in room 768, which is on the top floor of the Alpine wing--great view and very quiet.

The Westin re-make is a nice improvement over it's predecessor Silvertree hotel, where we have stayed many times. It's location on the slope is perfect for ski in/ski out access. Also, it's only a 15 min shuttle ride from Aspen airport, which certainly beats other ski areas. (Admittedly, getting in or out of ASE can be challenging.)
The staff was especially friendly and courteous and made every effort to make our stay pleasant. Special kudos to Evan the omelette guy, who made wonderful cheese blintzs on request, Maggie at the front desk, and Ellie the concierge. Starbucks coffee in the room was greatly appreciated.
The only hiccup was that we were not given the specific room we requested even though we were informed it was blocked for us the week prior to arrival. We received no response to a message left for the reservation manager for an explanation. However, the front desk provided an acceptable resolution.

Two suggestions to the hotel: Please replace the chairs/sofas in the lobby with something more comfortable. The current ones are too low and deep. Also, provide guest key access to enter the door on the 7th floor so guests staying on 6-8 can get to their rooms more easily.

Comments on some items mentioned in other reviews, which may reflect personal preference: (1) No bathtub. Great! The large shower is a considerable improvement over the traditional tub, although I would prefer to fully close the opening (eg, a bar of soap or shampoo bottle can bounce out if dropped). (2) Not up to typical Westin standards. Perhaps so, but this is not a brand new hotel. Westin had to revamp an older hotel. They did pretty well with the original, somewhat quirky layout. (3) Distant location of some rooms. Yes, the rooms on 6-8 and the higher 5's are a long way from the lobby and ski valet. However, they are also quieter since no one is walking by at all hours. I would hate to be near the main elevator where there is constant guest traffic. Also, if you are a bit clever, you will realize you don't need to use the ski valet and can simply walk out the door on the 7th floor or the 5th floor and be on the slope. Thus, room location has some pros and cons and may be a matter of preference. And obviously, whether it's worth the higher price for a slope view is a personal choice. For me, I'd rather spend the savings on breakfast.

Room Tip: While the rooms on 6-8 and the corresponding high 5's are distant from the lobby and ski valet...

Staff = Excellent (5 Stars)
Facility = Average (3 Stars)

Rating = Very Good (average of the two)

No review of this property should start without mentioning how wonderful the staff is, from the front desk, to ski valet, to housekeeping, to the bellman and last but not least the wonderful concierge staff. Clearly the people that operate this property on a daily basis are top notch. Unfortunately no review of this property could neglect to mention the sub standard (by Westin standards) physical structure of this property. We can not blame Westin for this, however we may have to fault them for signing a management agreement to operate this property which in its current physical layout struggles to be worthy of the Westin flag, and more notably the 5 Star Service the staff provides. This property was bought opportunistically in the waning days of the 2007-2010 real estate crisis by a joint venture led by Starwood Capital. Clearly the lipstick renovation done here is not meant to serve more than 7 to 10 years. This property probably can't exist as a Westin for that long not withstanding the excellent staff and tremendous location. With a per key cost of approximately $225k including the renovation this property will probably see the wrecking ball before we forget that the Russians staged a winter olympics in a city with palm trees.

Would I visit this property again? Absolutely, and the reason would be to see Candace working the front desk, Celeste at the Concierge desk, any of the prompt and responsive housekeeping staff, and the guys at the ski valet busting their tails for the rude and obnoxious people that tend to congregate in these parts. Additionally the location can not be beat. So if you can get over a less than Westin facility that is however staffed by an almost St. Regis like staff, than this place will work for you.

For the sake of brevity I won't go into the myriad of details about the physical structure (built in 1967, with a mostly cosmetic renovation - very little structural work) as you can read about those shortcomings in any number of reviews on this site or others. What I will close with is that the staff here tries inordinately hard to please and they deserve a better facility to work in if they are to be held to the Westin standard.

Room Tip: The building steps up the mountainside, so if you are in the "Alpine Wing" prepare for it...

Rooms are great. Front desk is very helpful. Ski valet services are very accommodating. These are the good sides. Here is the part that ruined overall experience - the food - its very average, waiters are confused and the service the slowest you can imagine. The worst is the bar service - you can sit in the lobby for an hour and nobody would come to you. Ordering a wine I suddenly noticed barmen pouring leftovers from 2 different bottles into my glass!!! After waiting for 50 min for orders outside and the manager giving us %20 discount my credit card was still charged a full price! Unacceptable!

Thank you for staying with us and providing such a detailed Trip advisor review. I am glad that you enjoyed your stay with us and for mentioning the helpful front desk and accommodating ski valet. I am sorry that you found our menu choice not to your liking. Our executive chef is very passionate about all of the menu items that we serve. Our lobby bar Vue is the gathering spot during après ski and it can be very busy. We do try our best to ensure that each and every guest gets an amazing experience. I am sorry that it did not happen for you on this occurrence. As for the overcharging on your credit card, please contact the hotel so that we can rectify the overage. We hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back in the future and provide you with an experience that exceeds your expectations.

I have stayed at this property many times over the past twenty years and when I returned this year wondering and anxious about what Westin might have done to this old favorite I was pleasantly surprised to find a spectacular renovation. The rooms are done in tasteful light colors making them seem much larger than they really are, the hallways no longer dingy now are carpeted and well lighted. Service continues to be of a high quality with many younger folks doing their internship here. A remarkable facelift done with great taste. And it continues to be the best location on the mountain.
