Milford House

We love Milford House and have been multiple times. The setting is idyllic--lakes, trees, rocks, wildlife, canoeing, fishing, swimming, hiking, sitting on the dock reading and feeding the chipmunk. Completely relaxing. Accommodations are simple, rustic and utterly charming. Stone fireplaces are lovely, old-looking quilts, smells of the forest, sounds of nature surrounds. Make your own simple meals or enjoy the great home cooking in the dining hall at very reasonable prices. The food is plentiful and filling. Relax on the outdoor porches (screened and open) after dinner, play volleyball, croquet, soccer, tennis, basketball, or swing on a swing! Visit with new friends and, if you must, use the Wi-Fi. Staff are friendly, efficient and welcoming. The only complaint is that it's a bit pricey, which seems grumpy to say after all that they provide (including cabin service to make your beds and wash dishes, empty garbage . . . ), but the bill is always a bit of a surprise. I can sleep anywhere but others in our gathering did complain about the beds -- in one case, after trying several beds in the cabin, a mattress was found that enabled 2 deep and rejuvenating sleeps :) Nevertheless, we've visited multiple times and look forward to going back every time. There's just some magic about the place. Thank you, Milford House, for another amazing memory of time with family.

Room Tip: Sunrise is on the right side of the road if you look at the cabin map. Sunset on the left. All the c...

My boyfriend and I took a long weekend to the Milford House for my birthday in June. This is a great place to go for a quiet, rustic retreat. The cabins are cute and cozy, nothing fancy but exactly what you expect. We stayed in two different cabins and the beds were not the most comfortable-we made due but I was dissapointed in this as a good night sleep is KEY. The lakes and wilderness in and around the cabins are breathtaking. We did not eat in the main lodge but it is encouraged. I think it would be better if they cabins did have cooking facilities as I do enjoy making meals and dining privately. We brought our own food and requested a microwave which was given to us. I would suggest bringing your own portable BBQ for convenience. The canoes and kayaks are a great way to spend the days or just having wine and reading on your deck.

Room Tip: Away from main lodge-request private. Bring own BBQ.

Glad you enjoyed your stay! We are replacing mattresses over the next few seasons. You're right 'a good night's sleep is key'.

The oldest sport lodge in NS, this place is everything wrapped up in a Dream: beautiful spot on the lakes, great rustic yet comfortable cabins with fireplaces, excellent food in the Lodge, loons and beavers to be heard and spotted if you are lucky! The Managers are gracious, welcoming, knowledgeable, and FUN. Best experiences to be had, here.

Room Tip: Swimming pool means pristine lakes, in this case. Each cabin has a dock. And Fitness Center means...

great staff, taking care of all your needs but at the same time not always in your face making you almost feel as if your at your own private getaway. Canoeing through the lakes was an incredible experience for our little one. We will be return visitors as often as possible. This is one of the most beautiful places in Nova Scotia.

Best place for nature rest and seclusion in Nova Scotia During the winter months. Nature trails covered in fall leaves, brisk morning hikes, warm toasty fires, the smell of home cooking your cottage. I can't wait to come back in the summer.

The setting couldn't be better, the lake is amazing for swimming, kayaking and canoeing. Plenty of availability of rentals even though the place was booked solid, so you dont need to bring your own unless you want to for some reason.
Service was okay.
Food in the restaurant was nothing exciting, but okay.
The price of these cabins is a bit too much, but they are really great. It would be so much better if the cabins had a kitchen where you could cook, or at least a microwave would be helpful, and would help offset the cost a bit for breakfast and lunch. There are a couple of places to eat nearby however which are better and less expensive, but you have to drive- nothing in walking distance other than the restaurant on site.

Room Tip: When we stayed there it was less windy on the lake to the right, not sure if this was just the wind...

I'm giving it 4 stars because of the location. As for service...the location alone earns it 4 stars.

Service is unexpectedly inconsistent and often disorganized. There was a definite difference between the way new guests were treated and the way board members and annual guests were treated.

If you've never been here, it's important to note that if you want a peaceful stay, request a cabin far from the lodge. I didn't know and was given a cabin near other guests right in between three cabins full of very boisterous, loud groups. A staff member confided that she'd told the manager those groups were difficult in the registration process and proceeded to drunken partying into the wee hours.

The last night, one of the nice staff moved me to a quiet cabin that apparently hadn't been available before that night. I only wish I'd had the last night's cabin the entire week! She confided that front desk staff is rarely "on the same page." I encountered both a very rude front desk lady and a nice one.

The food quality was all over the board and the kitchen staff seemed harried, explaining they didn't get clear direction from the management who made changes since he was appointed. One moment he seemed concerned, the rest of the time he ignored guests' concerns. Some staff smoke outside near where you're sitting to enjoy the beautiful nature -- complete with their cigarette smoke.

But! The location is fabulous!!! If you go into your stay with the understanding that you can't rely on the type of service you might expect unless you're a board member or yearly return customer, and reserve a cabin far from the lodge and family cabins, it's a very quaint and lovely stay. I plan to return some day, rent one of the very rustic cabins (with lovely bedding, however) far from the lodge. I'll count on my own resources for meals and enjoy the solitude and peace away from the lodge.

Room Tip: Make sure you get a cabin far from the lodge and other cabins if you want peace and quiet. Go to to...
