“Another Colorado trip made wonderful”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

I have been staying at the Mountain Motel every year for about 18 years; sometimes during the summer, sometimes on a ski trip. It is always worth the stay there but the new management has really made some great changes in the property. The owners/management/staff are all very friendly and helpful and are wonderful folks with whom to work and converse. I look forward to my next stay at the Mountain Motel while in the Salida area.

The external aesthetics completely belie the internal beauty and comfort. I had stumbled upon this property when I searched for 'Salida hotels with balconies'. Ours was the private unit behind the motel with its own parking space and entry. Lovely full-size kitchen with dining table, sitting area, 2 queen beds and separate jetted bath and shower stalls. Left us wanting for nothing. The only minor thing is that the shower stall is somewhat cramped and, at 5'2", I'm pretty small. However, the bathroom has a 2-sink vanity which I find to be extremely functional for 2 people. Lots of drawers and storage space. And the room was beautifully appointed. Very cozy and comfortable. An absolute gem. Ira was very gracious and gave us an excellent restaurant recommendation based on my comment that 'my hubby is a meat and potatoes man'. Currents was an awesome restaurant. We'll definitely stay here again.

Room Tip: Room 11 is behind the motel and one can see the mountains from its balcony (between the trees).

Great place to stay in Salida. Incredible value for your money. The owner was helpful and friendly and the room was charming and clean. Rooms have a coffee maker, small refrigerator, microwave, dishes and utensils. Plenty of towels, blankets, etc. Will stay here again.

Salida is a wonderful town. The people we met were so friendly and genuine. Ira was instrumental in connecting us with people and places. Our cabin was perfect. We had a sitting room to read and watch television. We had a small kitchen to cook in if we wished. Bella, the canine hostess, was very friendly. The location of the motel is convenient to downtown, fast food and good roads. It was a welcome retreat!! If you have a question ask Ira and he will do his best to find and fulfill your request. We are making plans for our next visit.

Room Tip: We had Cabin 3. It was perfect for the two of us.

SUPER clean rooms and public spaces -- grass had been freshly mowed and flowers were abundant.

Loved the 'public' fridge in the laundry room stocked with goodies -- pay on the honor system and all proceeds go to a local charity.

Room Tip: While my room was super clean and comfy, I like to be cool/cold when I sleep, but the A/C in this ro...

We stayed here for one night while on our way to Mt. Crested Butte. The room was a bit rustic but clean and comfortable. Management was very helpful. No real complaints about this motel! Our room had two Queen beds and a twin bed. Great room for family fun. Rates are very good also. Good restaurants with in walking distance. The bathroom was a. Bit small but it was clean. Lots of clean towels. Fridge, microwave in room. Free wifi! This motel is right on the main highway in town. Definitely worth a stop. Rated number one in town of Salida!

We stayed 2 nights and really enjoyed it. Ira was really nice and helped us out with places to eat and where to visit. Belle was also a great addition. The hotel is pet friendly which is also a bonus. We will definitely stay there again!

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hitchin' Post Motel, formerly know as the Mountain Motel welcomed its first guests in 1947. In 1996, six more rooms were built to accommodate the tremendous influx of visitors to the motel. The Hitchin' Post Motel has been a family endeavor, being locally owned and operated since 1947... Over 55 years! In December 2011, the owners of The Mountain Motel felt that it was time to showcase the charm and history of the motel by changing the name to The Hitchin' Post Motel representing the by-gone era of the 1940's, 50's and 60's. After transforming the office area into a lounge and reading room, the energetic owners set to work to begin outfitting the remaining nine rooms with an exhaustive inventory of Mountain Western Retro furniture, fixtures and room decor. Their vision to make the Hitchin'Post, Salida's FIRST "boutique mote;" and reinventing an American icon - the roadside motel is coming to life!Foremost in the minds of the staff at the Hitchin'Post Motel is to provide guests with a comfortable, cozy, distinctive and memorable stay. One-size DOES NOT fit all! Each room has been reimagined to bring in the owner's own style to make each room personable and "one-of-a-kind." Room decor is "Mountain Western Retro" - reminiscent of properties dating back to the 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's. We consider our motel an ever evolving work of "motel art," where updates and decor are an on-going effort. We pride ourselves on being the only local motel to bring the "boutique motel" experience to guests visiting Salida.A locally owned motel, the Hitchin' Post Motel is noticeably different in look and feel from other hotel/motel chains - we love it when our guests are pleasantly "surprised" to find that the motel offers much more than a room to sleep. We invite YOU to share our "Mountain Western Retro" experience! Whether it be... Sharing a bowl of chili on a cold day with other guests, or sipping the special "Hitchin'Post Ice Tea on a hot day... Your stay at the Hitchin'Post Motel in Salida, Colorado will be a memory to share forever and keep you coming back, year after year. ... more   less
