“Relaxing time in quaint motel”
Reviewed January 7, 2014

The room was well furnished and clean. Everything was comfortable and the room was nicely decorated with rustic knick-knacks. The motel manager (Ira) was very laid back and said he did not want to charge extra for our dogs because he has found in the past that dogs don't really cause any problems. This was like a breath of fresh air. When I asked Ira for directions to the Salida hot springs/pool, he gave us some complimentary tickets, so that saved us about $25. We didn't expect a full kitchen but we used it once we were there. I would definitely recommend this motel!

I booked this hotel wanting the small town feel, and hoped it would be comfortable like the reviews say. We arrived at the hotel after a long day of skiing, and found no one at the desk. 30 minutes later, the owner arrived after walking his dogs. Needless to say, we thought about throwing in the towel, and going down the road to the Hampton. The hotel is a bit dumpy appearing on the outside, so we had doubts. I was so wrong. After a quiet night, we were so glad we didn't leave. The place is quaint and small, but was clean, comfortable, and had all the amenities we needed. At the end of our stay, we decided we would be back. Next time, we will just let him know when we will be there, and have prearranged access to the rooms. No elevator or ice noises. Very warm, comfortable and nice inside.

Room Tip: We stayed upstairs in 8 and 9: nice view of the mountains. Warm and newly remodeled.

Green Features: hotel was clean. Outside environment a bit rough, but very nice for ice cold winter.

We were a little hesitant reserving a room that wasn't one of the "chain" motels, but we were SO pleased with our stay here! The rooms were up-to-date and the owner was so nice and helpful. They put us and our friends in adjoining rooms with a full kitchen which helped us as we were eating in our entire stay. Thanks so much!!

A great comfortable location. Cottage #4 is clean, rustic, cozy and comfortable. Two queen sizes beds in separate rooms with a kitchenette. The value of Ira's hospitality, knowledge of the area and becoming your friend enhances the experience. So relax and enjoy all the Salida has.

You can't ask for a better value than the Mountain Motel. Ira (the host) was wonderful and accommodated all of our needs. He even let us switch to a larger cottage when last-minute friends decided to join us. I love that it's dog-friendly and located minutes from downtown Salida and less than 30 minutes from Monarch Mountain. It was warm and cozy and the cottage had all the amenities that we needed. We stayed 3 nights and will definitely be back!

My husband and I had a wonderful time staying in Cottage #2. There were two queen size beds and a twin bed. It was especially nice that one queen bed was softer and one was firmer - perfect for a Husband and Wife that sleep better separately, and one who needs a firmer bed and one who needs soft.

The room was clean and felt incredibly homey. The amenities in the room included a mini-fridge, microwave, silverware, cups, and plates for food, coffee, a full size coffee pot with cream/sugar, a hairdryer in the bathroom, and television trays for dining in.

We only stayed one night, but had a wonderful time. The host, Ira, was so welcoming. We would certainly stay here again.

Room Tip: We liked the Cottages so that we would minimize any noise of surrounding guests.

Nice rooms and good value for the money. Our room (#9) had a loud heater that did not allow everyone to sleep soundly. Otherwise, everyone else in our group of 10 had a nice stay and good night's sleep. The owner, Ira, is very accomodating. My in-laws gave this motel a five "dot" rating. Be careful using Google Maps to locate motel. It will put you about 500 yards west of actual location of motel.

Official Description (provided by the hotel):
The Hitchin' Post Motel, formerly know as the Mountain Motel welcomed its first guests in 1947. In 1996, six more rooms were built to accommodate the tremendous influx of visitors to the motel. The Hitchin' Post Motel has been a family endeavor, being locally owned and operated since 1947... Over 55 years! In December 2011, the owners of The Mountain Motel felt that it was time to showcase the charm and history of the motel by changing the name to The Hitchin' Post Motel representing the by-gone era of the 1940's, 50's and 60's. After transforming the office area into a lounge and reading room, the energetic owners set to work to begin outfitting the remaining nine rooms with an exhaustive inventory of Mountain Western Retro furniture, fixtures and room decor. Their vision to make the Hitchin'Post, Salida's FIRST "boutique mote;" and reinventing an American icon - the roadside motel is coming to life!Foremost in the minds of the staff at the Hitchin'Post Motel is to provide guests with a comfortable, cozy, distinctive and memorable stay. One-size DOES NOT fit all! Each room has been reimagined to bring in the owner's own style to make each room personable and "one-of-a-kind." Room decor is "Mountain Western Retro" - reminiscent of properties dating back to the 1940's, 1950's, and early 1960's. We consider our motel an ever evolving work of "motel art," where updates and decor are an on-going effort. We pride ourselves on being the only local motel to bring the "boutique motel" experience to guests visiting Salida.A locally owned motel, the Hitchin' Post Motel is noticeably different in look and feel from other hotel/motel chains - we love it when our guests are pleasantly "surprised" to find that the motel offers much more than a room to sleep. We invite YOU to share our "Mountain Western Retro" experience! Whether it be... Sharing a bowl of chili on a cold day with other guests, or sipping the special "Hitchin'Post Ice Tea on a hot day... Your stay at the Hitchin'Post Motel in Salida, Colorado will be a memory to share forever and keep you coming back, year after year. ... more   less
