“Awesome B&B”
Reviewed February 6, 2014

We booked here because it was pet friendly, it looked good and had good reviews. We have stayed in other pet friendly places before but this is the cleanest and nicest one we have ever stayed at. The rooms are large, clean and well themed, breakfast is amazing and Gina and her staff are super friendly. The property with goats, chickens and dogs is just fun. We will definitely stay here when we come back.

Room Tip: All rooms are good. We stayed in a suite that was large and a nice view. Just ask when reserving and...

I was calling blind - we wanted to ski Monarch but I hadn't been up there in about 30 years so couldn't remember the area AT ALL. Had been to Salida last summer and really enjoyed. Well Monarch isn't really a 'town' like Vail, Summit County - looks like there are places to maybe stay close to the ski resort, but there isn't much else around so Salida was perfect option (was 20 minutes from Mountain Goat to the parking lot to ski). I called a few places and no one answered but when I called Mountain Goat Gina answered and I knew immediately that was where we'd want to stay. She was delightful and welcoming and a wealth of information. Her 'farm' was delightful and her rooms were fantastic - very comfy beds. Pet friendly (which my dogs don't have good enough manners to take public) but what a nice option. The other guests were totally friendly. Had nice hot tub, great location, great views and lots to do. She recommended restaurants and stuff to see and do and recommended place to rent skis (Haus)- $25 at Monarch and only $15 at the Haus - Cody was great there too at the Haus. We rented day before so it was easy to get up and have the BEST homemade, healthy (organic) breakfast and then shoot up to buy lift ticket (which we had buy 1 get 1 free from Shell!) and ski as long as we wanted and then leave leisurely. We won't bother with I-70 any more - we will make Salida and Mountain Goat our year round get away! Went to Mt Princeton - pricey - $22 for 'family side' and $35 for whole access but even late at night so was nice to soak (and when dark avoid stepping on people in the shallows of the running water!) but too expensive for what you get unless you can be there for the day. Heard there were other springs we will check out on the next adventure.

Room Tip: Suites on main level can easily sleep 4 - didn't see rooms upstairs but surely they are very nic...

I'm so happy you found us, Ruth. It made my day reading that you'll be stopping by again in the future.

As for the incredibly detailed review — thank you so much for taking the time to do so! I always love when our guests are able to relax and enjoy themselves at the lodge, while also really getting out and experiencing all that the area has to offer, and it certainly sounds as though you got the full range of activities down to a science.

We're already looking forward to when you come back!

Best,

We stayed here while skiing at Monarch this winter (2014) and were very pleased. Great hosts and cool guest around the breakfast table. The yogurt and other goat milk products were handmade and the owners are former baristas that make a mean cup of joe. Nice rooms, good location and relaxing.

We had a great time feeding the goats and getting a tour of the place. The pancakes were too die for especially with the special syrup. We tried the goat milk and yogurt, both were quite tasty. Definitely a good destination for a quick trip down south.

Room Tip: Get one the suits if you can, the beds are bigger. The beds are comfortable; however, the springs we...

We had a great time during our stay at the Mountain Goat Lodge. Gina was very easy-going and very accommodating of our dog (who really enjoyed meeting the goats and chickens). Breakfast was excellent as well.

I'm so happy that you all enjoyed your stay so much! Your dog Saxa is an absolute doll, glad she enjoyed meeting the whole crew (goats, alapacas, etc). We truly hope you'll pay us another visit down the road, but until then, thanks a ton for the great review.

The Mountain Goat Lodge has a remote feel while being conveniently located a short drive from Salida, Monarch, and some of the best wilderness in North America. The lodge is comfortable, elegant, and dog-friendly. It's people-friendly too, with superb breakfasts and a warm welcome. Visiting the goats, chickens, and indoor greenhouse at elevation is informative and in keeping with the western spirit of the place. Make sure to use the hot tub and enjoy one of the best views of the Milky Way available anywhere.

Green Features: They've made a whole series of good touches to be people and environmentally friendly, including fresh eggs from the chickens, recycling bins, and low light pollution.

What a superb review, Todd! I'm so glad you had such a wonderful stay with us. We pride ourselves on being dog-friendly, and obviously we love our human guests too, but we haven't used the term "people-friendly" before. That said, I love it, and will have to borrow it from you if that's okay! Hope you'll come by again in the future for some more awesome views of the Milky Way!

We brought our 2 young boys here (8 and almost 4 years old) as our home base during a long weekend exploring the area and skiing at Monarch. The location is superb for exploring the Salida area and getting to Monarch within about 20 minutes or so. The mountain views from the property are magnificent and we especially liked looking out our windows to check on the goats, llama and alpacas. My son got altitude sickness at Monarch and so he had to come off the mountain for the day, but he wasn't gloomy for long! Gina gave him some Tums from her personal stash (so sweet) and brought him with her to milk the goats and feed the chickens. He loved it (so did I). We had a nice afternoon hanging out with Gina and other guests while taking in the view from the family room and treating ourselves to various hot teas, cocoa and coffee drinks from the kitchen. The home is quite new and very comfortable and the kitchen/dining family room is a beautiful place to curl up with a book, with fellow guests and some tea or a glass of wine. And the hot tub is awesome with the mountains as your backdrop. There are fun family games and DVD's as well as a huge box of trains/tracks for the kiddos. Our little guy could have spent the whole weekend content in the game room. And the breakfasts were fantastic. Tons of yummy food including fresh yogurt from goat's milk served over fresh berries. We all had a lovely visit and the boys were really bummed when it was time to go. My 8 year old asked if we could return to Mountain Goat Lodge for our annual "first-weekend-of-summer-vacation" mountain getaway. What a great idea!

Room Tip: The 4 of us were very comfortable in the Oberhasli Suite. It is on the ground floor and stretches th...

I think your son has the right idea, Brenda! We certainly hope you'll all visit again for the first weekend of summer vacation! I really liked spending time with you and the boys. Altitude sickness is never fun, but it's nothing a little Tums and goat-time can't fix. It's great to know you all enjoyed the views and the activities both in the house and in the surrounding area. Hope you all have a wonderful spring, and please do keep us in mind for that early summer getaway!

All the best,
