“Rejuvenating”

Very natural landscape, peaceful, and relaxing atmosphere. The 90-minute yoga class was in a spacious room with an experienced instructor. The vegetarian meal was delicious and filling. They grow their veggies on site. The sugar scrub massage was divine. I haven't felt this relaxed in a long time. I enjoyed spotting the chipmunk and rabbits along the trails. A great way to unplug from the hectic modern world.

This was my second visit to Shoshoni. After a hard winter, I wanted to go somewhere I felt nurtured and at home. I was drawn back to Shoshoni where I could be with like-minded people with healthy lifestyles and open hearts. It was so refreshing to be welcomed back by the Shoshoni yogis and replenish myself with good yoga and good food and good people. I stayed in the dorms with a few other women this time, and next time will probably stay in a more private cabin. I highly recommend this retreat if you are looking to heal and relax in a natural way.

We were looking for a peaceful weekend getaway and definitely found it at Shoshoni. This mountain retreat was just what we were looking for, beautiful scenery, friendly guests and staff, amazing vegetarian food, plenty of time to hike, read, or attend classes on yoga or meditation. Not only were the yoga classes well taught, but the instructors were very knowledgeable, and able to help me practice, though I have an injured back. We really enjoyed the peaceful meditation classes and the quiet atmosphere. I strongly recommend the 2 mile "Buddha Rocks" hike. We will be coming back regularly and we're so glad we discovered it!

Pluses: beautiful scenery, very quiet

Minuses....

Staff: Many of the staff members were very unfriendly. When my boyfriend and I would smile and say "hi, how are you?" many of the staff would completely ignore us. Also when we checked in the person at the office charged the rest of our stay to the same credit card used for making the reservation without asking or telling us. We did not find this out until we went to check out. This would have been good to know since we planned to charge the balance on a different credit card.

The cabins: The shower drained extremely slow...which meant showering in shifts in a puddle of dirty water. The toilet leaked what appeared to be urine onto the bathroom floor. The cabin was very dark and uninviting.

The Yoga: The Yoga was good, but geared much towards beginners...did not provide a challenge.

The food: The food tasted good, but many of the meals were not filling. Many of the lunches and some dinners would consist of only soup and salad...no protein to keep you full.

Overall we felt very unwelcome (like outsiders coming into the staffs world.) Keep in mind I may have been okay with some of the minuses had we not spent $230 per night for our stay. I would not go back to Shoshoni.

KripaMa, Manager at Shoshoni Yoga Retreat, responded to this review, December 15, 2009
Shoshoni Yoga Retreat has been undergoing major renovations over the last few years including the addition of an eco-friendly remodeled cabin with solar-powered radiant floor heat, environmentally conscious building materials, beautiful hardwood floors and tiled bathroom. We will be continuing this renovation work until the entire retreat is fully updated and solar powered.

Under new leadership, the kitchen has renewed its commitment to the very best nourishing vegetarian meals. Shoshoni has also introduced more options for yoga classes, with challenging and advanced options, along with gentle, relaxing and restorative style classes.

The current staff at Shoshoni are 100% committed to providing a warm, welcoming atmosphere.

A peaceful escape from the hectic life of the big city, Shoshoni surpassed my expectations -- from the fabulous vegetarian meals to the gentle, yet energizing yoga sessions, to the quiet moments in the hot tub overlooking the Rockies. Great hiking trails, warm and friendly staff, and all the tranquil time you need to reflect and be immersed in the spiritual surroundings. Didn't want to leave. Rock on, Shoshoni!

We've visited Shoshoni every fall for many years now. I learned about it in the 90's as a rustic yoga spa with spectacular food. This held true for us into the early 2000's. Now the focus seems to be on nuturing their own community. The shine is off the food. Mostly grains, dairy and few vegetables. Vegans be sure to bring a stash of nuts, seeds and nut butter. You'll likely needed it to feel balanced and full. The accommodations remain rustic, but the bedding and towels are plush and there is lotion by every sink--so needed at 8000 plus feet. The hathayoga, meditation, music, chanting are top notch and keep us coming back. We are grateful to the Shoshoni family for joyfully sharing their practice and community with us .

If your soul and body are weary and in need of the refreshment that comes from a spectacular location, wonderful and gentle people, nutritious and delicious vegetarian meals and fabulous yoga instruction, meditation opportunities and body treatments, book your time at Shoshoni Retreat Center now.

The Center used to be a boys' camp in the 1930s and still has updated, but rustic cabins for travelers. This is an ashram devoted to yoga and meditation and service. The staff is composed of gentle, engaging and very hard working individuals who do not proselytize, but teach by their example and very good hearts.

Expect to have your spirits lifted by the natural beauty of the mountains and the kindness of the staff. 'Can't say enough very good things about this glimpse of heaven.

Enjoy a hike through the surrounding mountains, enjoy the sauna and hot tub, participate in one or both yoga classes, listen to your spirit during the morning and evening meditations and return to "your world" refreshed and renewed.
