Description: Howdy folks! Welcome to the True Grit Cafe Established in 1985, the "Grit" as it is known has been serving hungry tourists and locals for over 25 years. We offer excellent and tasty 'Cowboy Cuisine' in a comfortable western environment with a friendly staff that will make you feel like you're part of the Grit Family. We take a lot of pride in our homemade fare including the best dang chicken fried steak this side of the Rocky Mountains. Other menu specialties include hand-pattied burgers, mouth watering Tex-Mex Specialties, juicy steaks, house made meatloaf, fresh tempura battered mahi mahi fish and chips, sandwiches and gourmet salads. For the vegetarians we offer lots of tasty choices. We are also gluten-free friendly. Our wide selection of liquors, beer and wine give you a great place to gather round with the locals and visitors alike. We have two full bars, one on the main floor and one upstairs, around which locals and visitors gather to chat or share experiences in the beautiful San Juan Mountains. Our remodeled upstairs with its large private booths will accommodate from two to fourteen people, and don't forget the deck overlooking our beautiful park. The True Grit Cafe was built to honor the filming of the academy award winning movie "True Grit" starring John Wayne. Come sit on the deck and look out at the beautiful background you'll see throughout the movie. Oh, and you'll see a lot of pictures of the great star's film legacy all around.

When we are in Ridgeway, its the only place we eat. Friendly, fun, clean, food is awesome. You truly get what you pay for and then some:) The memorabilla on the walls is a great way to kill time while waiting for you food:) Go have a great meal with the Duke, it will be a great adventure:)

We recently spent two nights in Ridgway and ate at the True Grit Restaurant both evenings. The food was wonderful, loved the John Wayne decor, and greatly enjoyed listening to the very talented piano player who entertained us while we dined. Thumbs up!

Went to True Grit while staying in Ouray. It was a quick 10-15 min trip to Ridgeway. The restaurant has lots of memorabilia from the original True Grit movie, an old fashioned saloon piano player, and great atmosphere. We ate outside on the patio. The view was beautiful! The drinks, appetizers, and entrees were delicious!!! It made for a very enjoyable, memorable evening.

This place has all the appearance of a typical Western tourist restaurant. However, it seems to be popular with the locals as well as us tourists. We were there about 90 minutes and there was always a small group waiting to get a table. Older staff hustled and made sure we were taken care of so we didn't miss a beat in ordering or getting our food.
There are the typical American food choices plus specials. The night we were there folks all around us were getting the the chicken special with mashed potatoes and gravy except for the one guy with a big belly who wanted chicken fried steak and for his two sides he asked for two helpings of mashed potatoes. The waitress never blinked. I had a side lettuce salad that was very good. I don't think it had a single leaf of iceberg lettuce. They have many other salad combinations so it is possible to get away from the fried food.

We had a party of 7, they sat us right in front of the piano. The old man playing it was entertaining and talented. The service wasn't great, not terribly friendly or attentive. I had a burger and pork green chile. The burger was ok, nothing spectacular. The green chile was gelatinous, I wouldn't recommend it. Lot's of cool John Wayne memorabilia everywhere. Beer was good. I'm glad we visited once, I don't know that we'll do it again.
