“A good drive on a dirt road”
Review of Last Dollar Road

Reviewed October 20, 2013

Don't let the dirt road shy you away, this a nice trek across some beautiful mountain range (San Juan mountains) and the drive is safe unless it snows of course.

We've taken this road several times - but ALWAYS with a 4wd. As another reviewer mentioned, depending on the time of year it is, I wouldn't suggest a low 2wd. The road this past October was quite flooded in places and pretty torn up in others so be forewarned. They had a lot of rain this year. If you do have a 4wd though, it's pretty amazing, especially when the leaves have turned. The aspens are breathtaking. Many opportunities for gorgeous pics. Also...it takes longer than you would think because of the type of road it is so I'm not sure I would define it as a "shortcut". IMHO. But it's worth the extra time.

Nice short cut from Ridgway to Telluride with exceptional fall colors and views. Don't necessarily need a four-wheel drive vehicle, saw lots of sedans on the road.

Aspens were beautiful. Most of the road is well maintained. But be careful with a low clearance 2WD.

Last Dollar Road has some of the most breathtaking scenery in Colorado and it's not limited to autumn. Sure, scores of photographers set up their cameras in autumn to catch the fall colors, but the scenery is even more dramatic in the winter. We've snowshoed and cross-country skied on pristine powder snow and have never been disappointed. It's also a much shorter way to get to Telluride.
