“Serene setting for a tribute to Dennis Weaver”

Dennis Weaver Memorial Park
Ranked #4 of 17 things to do in Ridgway
Attraction details
Reviewed April 12, 2012

Located along the Uncompahgre River, this small park is accessable by car or, better yet, by foot along the rails-to-trail riverwalk at the northern end of Railroad Ave in Ridgway. Eagles are in the trees starting in November as they do their annual migration.

We knew a park had been dedicated to the well-respected Ridgway resident Dennis Weaver in 2007, and we'd passed the sign many times. One crisp fall day we decided to turn in and explore, but we weren't prepared for what we'd find. Our first sight of the giant bronze eagle in flight against the backdrop of the azure Colorado sky and the snowcapped San Juan Mountains in the distance took our breath away. After gazing at it for a while and soaking in the peaceful surroundings, we explored the area a bit, reading Weaver's eagle poem "Dream Your Eagle" on "Poem Rock" and discovering the meaning of numerous cairns and the Native American medicine wheel. Then we walked down a shaded path to the Uncompahgre River, where there is a picnic area.

There are no restrooms at the park, so stop before you go. No dogs are allowed, because it is also a wildlife and waterfowl preserve. The adjacent maintained concrete walk along the river is open all year, so the park can be reached by the walkway from Ridgway or from Hwy 550 at the turnoff to the River Sage subdivision. Restrooms are available at the "river bend" part of the walkway. Visitors are welcome to walk the medicine wheel and place cairns. Because this is such a peaceful, special place, I would recommend that parents talk with their children about respecting the area as a memorial; otherwise, knocking down the cairns or climbing the eagle might prove too tempting.

The park is open from April through October.
