First contact with Peter was to book at fairly short notice and asking for a favour already! He could not have been more accomodating and welcoming. Our 4 yr old daughter very much enjoyed looking at the photos on the website everyday until we went!!
Arriving to Irenes scones, jam and cream made for an excellent start!
We stayed in Kiri which is the largest of the cottages but had a sneaky peak around 2 others and would be happy to be in any of them. 3 front onto a large lawn and the adventure playground so if you have small children (that you want to keep an eye on them one of these would be better) Smiddy faces the other way and I would say is more private if that is important to you.
The kitchen was well equipped, there was a CD system with option to plug in MP3 etc, flat screen TV and DVD, make sure you poke around as we found drawers full of magazines (to suit everyone) and games.
We had great fun feeding the chickens every day and Gracie Mae very much enjoyed her experiences with Peters mini tractor!
We got lots of advice from Peter on local walks (one of which is though the woods on the property - well worth doing!), horse riding (Skipper at West Anstey was ideal for Gracie Mae to go off over the moors for a couple of rides), where to go and not go.
Sadly we did not get to try out the impressive looking wood burner as the weather was boiling for our trip (we were delighted that Peter and Irene organised for the rain only to fall overnight!) but it would be worth going in the winter just for that.
Withypool, The Royal Oak - great food and friendly staff, good childrens food too.
Tarr Steps, lovely for paddling and picnic and the hotel up the hill had fab food but you can't take under 12's in the evening.
To be honest we didn't do anything very touristy so can't comment on any attractions although the Honey Farm was interesting. It was lovely to just sit at our outside table watching GM race around and watch the ponies over the valley. It was totally relaxing, if you are used to road noise you might struggle to sleep with the silence!
Insect repellant in the summer is a MUST as when out and about the horse flies on the moor are a pain. No mobile signal (horray!!!) although apparently 02 occasionally drifts in!
We went tired and stressed and left wishing we had booked 2 weeks.

We had a thoroughly enjoyable stay in Smiddy couldnt fault it. Comfortable bed, clean and well equipped. Wonderful setting with plenty of good walks from the cottage. Our young border collie had a great time. The walk through the woods was most enjoyable looking out for the deer and other wildlife. Peter and Irene where great hosts very helpful The cream tea on arrival was delicious the fresh flowers added a nice touch and Peters info on the area was very helpful. We hadnt been to Exmoor before but we will certainly go back in the near future and stay at West Holowcombe.

Fantastic week can not recommend it highly enough. Having travelled through stunning Exmoor landscapes (glad we had taken our hosts advice and taken the detour avoiding the 1/3 hills with a horse box), we were greeted warmly by Irene and Peter and by a delicious cream tea waiting for us in Jasper.
Ponies were equally glad of the snug stables and great Bridleways near by.
The cottage was appointed to the highest standard throughout , with the beautiful weather as a bonus, we were sorry to leave, who could ask for more. It would be lovely to return.

We had a wonderful relaxing holiday in Smiddy - the cream tea on arrival was delicious. Scenery and walks fantastic. Further away from the shops than we are used to but that was all part of the charm. Children had a lovely time in the play area and on the bikes and ride-ons, they also made friends with the children in the adjoining cottages. Peter and Irene are wonderful hosts and were always around with ideas for places to see and local eating houses. We will be back again I am sure.

From the first moment we arrived being greeted by Peter and Irene (and of course the very welcome cream tea!) our holiday was the best one we have had in a number of years. The cottage was extremely comfortable and nicely presented. The area is very scenic. The information about the area given by Peter was most helpful. We hope to stay again next yeat.

West Hollowcombe Farm is just such a fantastic place to stay especially if you have a young family! Peter and Irene were extremely friendly and welcoming and would do anything to make our stay as comfortable as possible. Our son loved playing on the ride on cars and tractors and especially loved the lambs and chickens. The cottage (Jasper) was exceptionally clean and very well equipped. We had a cot and high chair provided and a stair gate too - excellent facilities and a fantastic large living area which our son loved exploring! The log burner kept my husband very busy and entertained (!) (boys toys) and made the cottage so warm and cozy. We will definitely be back!
