“Lovely ... peaceful ... beautiful”
Reviewed September 19, 2011

Roll up all the good things other reviewers say about West Hollowcombe and you have my opinion ! We stayed in Jasper, huge, clean and well equipped. Peter and Irene are great ... our grocery shopping arrived before we did and what could be better than arriving to find Peter had put it away and that there was a cream tea waiting ! Beautiful and peaceful countryside, lovely walking, wonderful wildlife and very relaxing, just what I want from my holidays. Good facilities for children, dogs and horses too should you need them.

My wife and our 2 boys (aged 2 and 5) stayed at West Hollowcombe Farm for a week this August. We stayed in Smiddy which was absolutely fantastic; very cozy and homely and with all the space and mod cons we needed! The boys loved playing on the playground at the front of the cottages while we chilled out on the bench with a coffee.

Peter and Irene were wonderful hosts and made us feel very welcome; lovely cream teas on arrival, Peter took the boys for a ride on the mini tractor, lots of helpful advice on places to visit. On the first night we were concerned our Sainsbury’s delivery wasn’t going to find us and they even offered to find us all something for dinner if need be - very thoughtful (it got there in the end!). We were also invited to the 66th Hawkridge Revel and Gymkhana which was a lovely afternoon soaking up country life!

We had some great days out. Went for a day out in Plymouth, shopping, lunch, to the aquarium and walks round the harbour. Was quite a long drive (90 minutes each way) but worth it. The boys loved the aquarium! Went to The Big Sheep near Bideford which is excellent! Lots to see and do in all weathers (sunny for us fortunately). You can return within 5 days for a fiver too we went twice! Highly recommended!! Saunton beach is about an hour away and is beautiful! Vast expanse of golden sand with a gift shop, café, surf school etc. Can’t imagine a better beach in the area. Highly recommend taking a drive South down The Atlantic Highway (A39) to Widemouth Bay – fish and chips on the beach watching the surfers as the sun sets. Bliss! We also spent an afternoon on the beach in Minehead which was fun. A bit like Blackpool!

If you are looking for a cozy, beautiful, peaceful, welcoming, family friendly place to stay in North Devon/Exmoor you will struggle to find anywhere better than West Hollowcombe! Can’t wait to go back!

If you like peace and quiet then West Hollowcombe is perfect for you because it is in the middle of nowhere. The owners, Peter and Irene are very friendly and welcoming, even lending our whole family wellington boots as the local walks we a bit muddy. The Cottages themselves are very well equipped, with good TV, Fridge/Freezer, Dishwasher, Microwave, and Woodburner to mention some. There is also a good laundry facility and you are free to borrow the good quality BBQ's (2 between the 4 cottages).

Phone signal is variable to none so be aware of this, but it just added to the peace and quiet for us.

The cottage was very clean and tidy and the cream tea supplied on our arrival was fantastic, (along with the eggs from Peters chickens).

Our dog really enjoyed being allowed to run free and safe.

For those with children, the kids enjoyed playing on the equipment and, although isolated, all of North Devon's numerous attractions were within an hours drive.

Our cottage Kiri is the biggest, sleeping 6, 1 room (downstairs) with en-suite bathroom (inc shower), the other two rooms being upstairs gallery at each end of the cottage, these two rooms shared a downstairs bathroom.

We hired 2 neighbouring cottages, shared between 4 families. The cottages were spacious, comfortable, very clean and really well fitted out as well as being very homely. We made good use of the large lawn for cricket games and the children (2 aged 4 and 2 aged 10/11) loved having free run of the garden and the play area. The little ones enjoyed helping out with the chickens and our host, Peter, was absolutely fantastic with the children, even giving them a ride and letting them drive his small tractor!

There are great walks from the cottage and nearby moor and fabulous views. Driving to the beach is a bit time-consuming, but the countryside is so beautiful it doesn't really matter.

We arranged for a Tesco grocery delivery to arrive the day we arrived, and this worked really well. The kitchens are exceptionally well equipped for preparing large family meals of all sorts, and there is also a large bbq.

All in all a wonderful holiday and beautiful memories!

Our second trip to West Hollowcombe this year. This time we stayed in Kiri- very cosy. Watching the numerous birds from the window was a joy, so nice for the pigeons to be outnumbered, not like home. Once again we were greeted with one of Irene's delicious cream teas- hopefully all the walking minimized the weight gain! Ellie (10) enjoyed playing on the go-karts and made some new friends as ever. We can't fault Pete and Irene who provide a relaxing, restful location for a family holiday. Maybe we could fit in one more week before the end of the year.........

Thanks again to Peter + Irene for making us very welcome. We felt relaxed and at home immediately. The only negative thing we can think of is that we couldn`t stay longer !! The girls (8 +10) enjoyed West Hollowcombe so much we had to drag them away for day trips..
We stayed for 2 weeks in Norton and it was very clean, spacious and very well furnished, inkl. cable TV.
The 3 Km walk to Tarr Steps is very worthwhile and we recommend a picnic at Lower Willingford Bridge - Straight out of the entrance to the next T-junction, turn right and then approx. 4 Km to the bridge. The kids can play for hours building dams in the shallow water.
One of our highlights was horse riding on Exmoor from West Anstey Stables.
Allow more time for any trips as most roads in the area are narrow and winding but you will be rewarded with excellent views. Wild Exmoor ponies can usually be seen on Molland Moor. We even saw a small herd from our kitchen table ...
If you are considering a trip to this area for any reason, there`s no need to look any further - We recommend West Hollowcombe !!

What can we say, apart from we fell in love with West Hollowcombe within minutes of arriving. We stayed in 'Smiddy' which is the smallest of the four properties but there was more than enough room for us with our two children aged 5 and 2. The cottage has a very cosy feeling and on our arrival found a very scrumptious looking pile of scones, jam, clotted cream with some tea bags and a jug of milk which was a very welcome gesture after our journey from Oxfordshire. The cottage itself has two bedrooms, the double which is up a spiral staircase on the mezzanine floor over looks the living room, at night you can draw the curtains along the ballastrad to seperate you from the rest of the cottage which we liked as it made very cosy. The 2nd bedroom, a twin is downstairs and has views over the local hillside. Peter and Irene also managed to get in a cot for us as our youngest is still in one at night. The living area had two comfy sofas and a table with four chairs that looked out of a beautiful arched window . Just outside the window there is a bird feeder which Peter fills up every morning which encourages a whole host of birds to our childrens amazement as well as rabbits(6 one morning). We also saw bats at dusk and heard various owls and other wildlife in the evening. The bathroom has a bath and seperate shower which was great as our two children still havent progressed onto showers yet. The kitchen has everything you could possibly want from a holiday cottage, including a small freezer compartment big enough to take a few things but there is a larger one in the laundry room if you have the need for more space.
Soon after our arrival Peter came down and explained various things about Smiddy and West Hollowcombe even keeping the children entertained whilst doing so. Peter and Irene made us feel very welcome and were more than happy to help out in any way they could. Thank you Peter for the wellies.
The children had so much space to run around on the lawn, in the playground and play on the various ride on toys and other toys. that are on site Our five year old has become quite the go-kart rider over the week including whizzing down the track behind the cottages. One morning the children helped with feeding the chickens and to there great delight finding an egg. We have already had the 'Can we get some chickens?' since being home! There are vairous walks that you can take directly from West Hollowcombe or run as my husband did on a few occasions, hilly but well worth it.
In the laundry room there are many leaflets for attrations around the local area which helped us on deciding a couple of our trips.
Our hosts for the week Peter and Irene were great and they are what makes a lovely site in to a great place to stay. Peter remembers everyones names which made our five year old thing he was the Bees Knees.
We will be back as we think West Hollowcombe is fanatastic. I have already started telling our friends what a lovely place it is.
Many Many thanks Peter and Irene for making us all feel so welcome.
See you again soon.
