We enjoyed our second stay at The Springs Resort and Spa in June 2011. We arrived late at night. Having worked all day and driven down from the Denver area, we were very tired. We were just ready to check in to our room and jump into the hot pools.

When we checked in we discovered that the type room we had reserved was not available. I was disappointed to be told we had a queen as opposed to king sized bed. My husband is 6' 3", a big guy, and I wanted him to be comfortable. I stated my case and the gentleman at the front desk (I am remorse to say I can't remember his name) went above and beyond to accommodate moving us to a king suite.

This was a special trip for us and this gentleman saved the day! We got happily settled in, suited up and hit the hot springs. It was well after midnight, and there were only three or four other people about. When you stay at this property you have 24 hour access to the pools. It is so quiet and peaceful late at night. Perfectly relaxing.

We are returning in late September to soak our cares away at this wonderful resort and spa. It truly is a little bit of heaven on earth. Treat yourself and stay at my favorite resort.

We desided to take our two boys snowboarding/skiing for their spring break and desided on wolfcreek mountain. We like staying at different places, not your cookie cutter hotel and the Springs Resort looked like it was right up our ally.. It was!! the newer part of the resort, which we stayed in is a totally green building and who doesnt like helping the earth. The room was really nice and perfect for the four of us.Plus you get robes for the springs. The hot springs were perfect at the end of a long day on the mountain and 100% kid friendly. I think they enjoyed the springs more than us. All the staff was very friendly and helpful. The springs resort was in a great location right on the river and a short walking distance from some great restaurants.. We will for sure be back, many times.

The Good:
We stayed 6 nights in a Deluxe King room (#100) it was very close to the pools with only a short walk which happened to go right past the very plentiful warm towels that the resort provided hassle free. The grounds were very well kept with abundent flora everywhere. Everyday we would watch the pool keepers flush out, power wash and refill a couple of the 23 pools which helped reassure us as to the sanitary conditions of the pools. The pools themselves are unlike anything we have ever experienced. We are frequent visitors to Glenwood Hot Springs. This is nothing like that. It is far more intimate. Even though the resort was busy the whole time (especially afternoons), it was never a problem to find a pool for yourselves. The resort seemed to have ample staff running around to take care of whatever problem arose. Resort guests get 24 hour access to all of the pools and there are about 4 pools that are reserved for hotel guests only.
Now for the bad:
Our room was hardly worth the price. We have paid less per night in 5 star resort properties with more amenities. The resort offers no breakfast that we could find. Our room had a small kitchenette so we simply went grocery shopping and fixed our own breakfast and lunches most days, but hardly our idea of vacationing. In fairness there were a few restaurants within waking distance and other nicer restaurants a short drive away, Our bed was a king and was just ok. The room had two windows one of which was obscure glass with no shade to block the morning sun, so if you stay there use one or two of the decorative pillows from the bed to block the light or you will be getting up with the roosters. The room was very dated (enameled steel bathtub, laminate counters, plastic tub surround Old style T.V.). Housekeeping was generally good, but one day they never showed up to make up our room at all. When I called the front desk late that afternoon the manager on duty said housekeeping had gone home for the day, but he offered to come take out our trash or?? He said we must have had the do not disturb sign out - we didnt. Our smoke alarm went off a couple of times mysteriously, when we called to complain however they replaced it yet that afternoon and it seemed to work fine then. The wireless internet was a joke. When we complained about it the manager said "well try it in the common area of the new building. Its supposed to be really good there" They tell you to wear wrist bands they provide to indicate that you are a guest and are allowed in all of the pools, but in all the time we were there I nver saw anyone checking the other guests (many of whom had no wrist band on) to insure that they had actually paid to get in - Oh well. I would visit Pagosa Srings again, but I would probably just get a nice room elsewhere and pay the daily fee to use the pools.

Mrs. B and I returned last week for a two-night stay at The Springs Resort. We’ve stayed at the Resort in the past mostly for its 24-hour access to the thermal springs and also because that access is included in the price of the accommodations. The Pagosa Springs geothermal pools are the best we have found and we will return often.

It’s too bad we can’t say the same for the Springs Resort. This trip we paid almost $300 per night, including taxes, for a larger suite with a kitchen. Upon check-out, we wished instead that we had opted for the basic room for $189. As Mrs. B observed, our suite’s décor was depression-era minimalist with a sofa that must have come from a garage sale, wall hangings and pictures that could have adorned a prison cell, and pre-Edison lighting. For the price, one could reasonably expect a window that didn’t face directly into the adjacent room’s door. At night, a glaring security light penetrates the room through the heavy curtain. The shower head in the bathroom is at chest height, so you can combine your fitness regime by doing squats while washing your hair.

The service is about average; the WIFI didn’t work. We didn’t use any of the Spa services: they appeared a bit pricey and we were there for the waters anyway.

Given the pricing for separate access to the thermal springs, if you are in town only for a couple of days, it probably makes sense to stay at the Springs Resort. If you are planning a stay of four days or longer and want to enjoy the thermal springs, you may want to find a more comfortable (and cheaper) hotel or B&B and pay for a weeklong pass. That’s what we are most likely going to do.

I will begin by saying that this resort was fantastic. The reason I rated it a 4 instead of a 5 was because of the sulphur smell. This is something they could not control. My son and I were very bothered by the smell but my the other 3 members if our family were not bothered too much. I had read negative reviews about the rooms but wenstayed in the deluxe suite and I was great. I had also read complaints about there being no food on the Premises and thought we would have to drive to get something to eat but it was a very short walk across the walking bridge to a number of good places. The springs were so unique and well maintained and if you are used to the strong sulphur smells you will be fine. One helpful hint is to bath in a suit that you can toss. I would definitely stay again
