“Good service, but the room was just okay.”
Reviewed September 6, 2012

We selected the Black Bear Manor based on so many positive TripAdvisor reviews, and although there were some aspects of our stay that we enjoyed, we also had a few disappointments. First, the room we stayed in (#4) was not my idea of luxury. The bed was a nice king and was comfortable, but it took up almost the entire room, and we only had one chair for the two of us to share. The big issue was the bathroom. It was clean, but it was so dated. The floor was 1980s linoleum, the fixtures were probably from the same era, and the tub was an old plastic model. It just was not at all luxurious. The only touches of luxury were probably the bathrobes. We also found the room slightly too warm when we arrived and had some issues keeping it cool. The innkeepers are very up-front about no A/C, so we weren't expecting that, but our room was on the West side of the building so it got all the afternoon sun, and it was hot while we were there. The problem we had is that you can't really leave a window open for a breeze, because there is no window. There is a sliding door, so you can leave that open, but we felt a little uncomfortable leaving that door wide open all night (which was necessary to make the room a comfortable temp.) because the room looks out on a parking lot that is used by neighbors who were coming and going at all hours. It just wasn't ideal, though the ceiling fan and floor fan do help too.

We also were a little disappointed in the breakfast. There is fruit, cereal, and bread beginning at 7:30, but the full breakfast isn't until 9am. We only ate the full breakfast twice because we like to be out and about earlier. Most days there were several other guests waiting around for the full breakfast as early as 8, so I think it would be nice if it was offered a bit earlier.

We had an issue with housekeeping too, which was something I've never experience before. We came back from a morning hike at around 11am and entered our room through the sliding door from the outside. When we came in, our room door into the lobby was wide open with nobody anywhere to be seen. We walked out into the hall and looked around, but could not find anyone. Clearly the housekeeper had been in our room, because the bathroom had been cleaned, but then she left and our room door was left wide open. Because we were hiking I had left my purse in the room and was disturbed that our valuables weren't treated with more care. After that we just kept the door locked and didn't have any housekeeping service during the rest of our stay.

We did like the outdoor areas to lounge, and we found the couple who live on the premises to be very friendly and helpful. I think if we were to stay here again I would choose a room that is NOT on the West side; those seemed to be cooler and also a bit roomier.

Off the main street in Ouray - quiet and charming. The staff was warm and welcoming. One of the best B&B's I've been to. Breakfast was delicious and the happy hour is a great chance to meet fellow travelers. A wonderful experience.

Stayed 2 nights but would have loved to stay more!! Rooms are very nice each with private bathroom and also outside exit to patio which leads to hot tub. Have never stayed at a bed and breakfast, but this was like a small hotel with amenities of a B&B. The evening social hour was great!!! All the wine and beer you wanted, and so much fun talking to the other guests and learning about them. The breakfast was wonderful and plentiful in a beautiful surrounding. Location was great, walking distance to shopping and restaurants. The staff very outgoing, Erica, Margaret and Jim do make this a special place. We will return!!! Oh Margaret keep the Pin Stripe beer coming!!!! Ha! Ha! Thanks again Jim and Pam, La Junta CO

Room Tip: all rooms are nice, but the suite is exceptional!!!

The rooms are very welcoming and comfortable. Breakfast is amazing--homecooked, fresh, plentiful, variety of choices, and delicious. Their happy hour is generous, with no limit of how much wine or beer you want, and the options are of good quality. This B&B is right in the heart of downtown Ouray, and will more than likely see us again!

We stayed 3 nights and we just had an amazing time. We will be back. The views from the property were epic. It is right off the main drag in ouray, within easy walking distance to all of the shops and restaurants. The rooms were well-sized, up to date and each had their own character. The staff took great care of us with a bountiful breakfast and great advice.

We stayed in this hotel for 2 nights...Our room was small but very comfortable...The breakfast was a feast and everything was delicious. Wine or beer in the afternoon also was a very nice amenity. Our host Margaret could not have been more helpful...This place is about 2 blocks off the main street and therefore is very quiet. They really don't encourage young families as it is really for adults only.

My family and I just returned from a week long stay at Black Bear Manor - and are ready to return already - if just for the company of Margaret - the caretaker, cook, and everything else lovely lady! ..... Oh and then there is the view, the sun coming up above the spectacular mountains in the morning, the free wine and beer just as you are getting back from a fabulous hike in the mountains - often recommended by Margaret, the big comfy bed, absolutely delicious breakfasts, hot coffee early in the morning, cold drinks in the fridge whenever you desire, popcorn in the 3rd floor game room/tv room/star gazing room, hot tub .... need I go on! We plan to go back next summer (and maybe even visit this winter while skiing in Telluride - yes - it was that lovely and inviting)!
