We selected the Black Bear Manor based on so many positive TripAdvisor reviews, and although there were some aspects of our stay that we enjoyed, we also had a few disappointments. First, the room we stayed in (#4) was not my idea of luxury. The bed was a nice king and was comfortable, but it took up almost the entire room, and we only had one chair for the two of us to share. The big issue was the bathroom. It was clean, but it was so dated. The floor was 1980s linoleum, the fixtures were probably from the same era, and the tub was an old plastic model. It just was not at all luxurious. The only touches of luxury were probably the bathrobes. We also found the room slightly too warm when we arrived and had some issues keeping it cool. The innkeepers are very up-front about no A/C, so we weren't expecting that, but our room was on the West side of the building so it got all the afternoon sun, and it was hot while we were there. The problem we had is that you can't really leave a window open for a breeze, because there is no window. There is a sliding door, so you can leave that open, but we felt a little uncomfortable leaving that door wide open all night (which was necessary to make the room a comfortable temp.) because the room looks out on a parking lot that is used by neighbors who were coming and going at all hours. It just wasn't ideal, though the ceiling fan and floor fan do help too.
We also were a little disappointed in the breakfast. There is fruit, cereal, and bread beginning at 7:30, but the full breakfast isn't until 9am. We only ate the full breakfast twice because we like to be out and about earlier. Most days there were several other guests waiting around for the full breakfast as early as 8, so I think it would be nice if it was offered a bit earlier.
We had an issue with housekeeping too, which was something I've never experience before. We came back from a morning hike at around 11am and entered our room through the sliding door from the outside. When we came in, our room door into the lobby was wide open with nobody anywhere to be seen. We walked out into the hall and looked around, but could not find anyone. Clearly the housekeeper had been in our room, because the bathroom had been cleaned, but then she left and our room door was left wide open. Because we were hiking I had left my purse in the room and was disturbed that our valuables weren't treated with more care. After that we just kept the door locked and didn't have any housekeeping service during the rest of our stay.
We did like the outdoor areas to lounge, and we found the couple who live on the premises to be very friendly and helpful. I think if we were to stay here again I would choose a room that is NOT on the West side; those seemed to be cooler and also a bit roomier.
