“Best Little Museum in the West”

Ouray County Museum
Ranked #12 of 35 things to do in Ouray
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed October 10, 2013

This is an actual award the museum has won. An excellent collection of Ouray County history in the beautiful old Miner's Hospital. Sections of museum organized by different professions in the area such as mining, ranching. Outside displays. Beautiful tribute to Chief Ouray out front. Bronze bust is wonderful likeness to Ouray. So detailed and information, one could easily spend a day, but even a one hour walk through will leave the visitor thankful they stopped by.

Don't miss this one. What an awesome museum. Three floors of local history stuffed to the gills. There is something for everyone to enjoy. Some displays include an old time general store, victorian parlor, Native American history, mining, railroad, military, farming,& ranching. There is also tons of medical displays including an antiquated operating room. Make sure you visit the mineral section in the basement & turn out the lights to see the glowing rocks. We suggest a unique souvenier from the small gift shop such as an authentic horseshoe that was used on a local ranch.

The exhibits are set up in a cool and interesting way. Loved the mining recreations. A good way to explore the old mines without the danger do falling in.

We visited the Ouray County Museum located in the old hospital. The museum covers three floors of the former Ouray Hospital. The history is shown from the perspective of the miners, the women of the community and the hospital. There is also a showing of the various mining machinery that was used during the mining period. A very good showing of what the area was like in the late 1800's and early 1900's.

This is by far one of the best little museums we have been to.

TONS of information and artifacts. 3 stories of a an old hospital.

Word of caution, the there are three stories, which means stairs. There was an older couple there that was having a hard time maneuvering the stairs. Also, this place is not handi-cap accessible.

Must visit if you are a history buff!

$6 for an adult.
