“Enjoy "swift" water with the black swifts....”

A must see in Ouray! We hiked to the Box Canyon Falls from our motel, paid $3 a piece, visited with all the little chipmunks and began an exciting adventure to the Falls. I do not recommend sandals or flip-flops. You will wind around and down to a most incredible sight, but I'm not gonna ruin the surprise. On your journey keep your eyes open for nesting Black Swift birds and be sure to look up Sue-the Bird Lady. She is an amazing ornithologist who is just full of interesting information. She goes to the Canyon every single day to document the daily activities of her bird-friends. After traveling down into the gorge (I hope I didn't spoil the surprise.), be sure to travel back up to the bridge that spans the surprise. It is a relatively short but steep climb to the bridge. You will be in for more adventures when you hike through the tunnel and walk the permimeter of Little Switzerland of America! You will want to sing "The Hills are alive with the Sound of Music!" Do not miss this wonder of nature.

“Cool!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 21, 2011

We wanted to see the falls at Box Cayon Park, and stopped by on our way to Silverton. This was an easy in/out locale that took us about 1 1/2 hours. You can spend longer if you want to hike around and go up to the catwalk. You paid the 4$ per adult fee in a small gift-shop. The woman working was very helpful, especially as my husband had questions about the birds there. There is a rare bird (a swallow of some sort) that nests there in the canyon. Locating the well camouflaged nest was impossible as was spotting an actual bird..needless to say hubby was disappointed! Even being 50+ with a bad knee, I could manage the short walk/climb to the falls, navigating the metal steps to enjoy the roaring falls. The steps are slippery, so be careful. The falls roared through the canyon and were loud and beautiful. There was some abandonded mining equipment on the floor of the canyon, that gave you a little taste of history. You and your camera will be a bit damp. My one comment would be to parents of young children...keep your eye on them! There were lots of children running up and down the metal steps, climbing on nearby rocks and harrassing the chipmunks, despite the signage asking kids NOT to do this. I was scared for the kids and at times was just plain ol' annoyed. Overall, this was a worthwhile stop.

“Impressive waterfall”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 29, 2011

A pretty easy hike - especially to the waterfall. The higher area (above the river) was a little harder, uphill. It wasn't as impressive as the waterfall.
You can hike and explore in an hour, then go to Cascade Falls and explore there; all in one afternoon (that's what we did)
Take your camera and a tripod to get great photos from the catwalk!

Well worth the 3 buck entrance fee. Be sure and see the chipmunks when you first arrive.
