“Best Kept Secret in the Rockies”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 27, 2013

Wow, wow, WOW! As a Colorado native, I thought I'd seen it all in my beloved state. Nestled in Chalk Creek Canyon is a sight of spectacular beauty: a soaring chalk mountainside, lush forest speckled with aspen, a snow-covered mountaintop, a picturesque creek where Mount Princeton Hot Springs delights folks with pools and spots IN THE RIVER that are warmed by the hot springs. And in the midst of this incredible setting sits Deer Valley Ranch. The gals at the front desk were kind, warm-hearted souls who truly care about their family-owned establishment. We put our family of 7 in the Pitkin cabin, a three bedroom, two bathroom rustic, cozy cabin with a massive stone fireplace and floor to ceiling windows with amazing views. It was SUPER CLEAN, which is amazing for a place built in the 1950's! My kids also loved the room with the bunk beds. We used the kitchen to cook breakfast and dinner with ease-- it has everything you need. And best of all, the reason this place gets its name, are the herds of peaceful, gentle deer that roam the grounds of this dude ranch. They walked by our cabin throughout the day, quietly going about their business of foraging in the snow for food. They are friendly enough to pose for pictures and come as close as your porch to say hello. Just a ten minute drive west is the ghost mining town of St. Elmo, which despite its snow-packed uphill road, was easily accessible by our minivan with snow tires. The ranch has an old western town play area for the kids. Mine felt like they were in Disneyland, they loved it so much. The horses are stabled on site as you enter, which makes for a joyful spot to stop and say hello. The deal we got to stay here through Living Social was unbelievable. Deer Valley Ranch staff even sweetened the deal with complimentary tickets to the hot springs just a mile down the road. Our family loved this place and the surrounding area so much we vowed to come back someday during the summer. Although I must say, coming here in the off-season was second to none, in terms of its peacefulness, the value for your money, and the plethora of activities and sites to see in the area. Did I mention we went to Ski Cooper during this trip? And white water rafting is just ten minutes away. Amazing place, amazing location, five stars hands-down from this usually tough critic.

Room Tip: The rustic cabins on site are different from each other and can accommodate different sizes of group...

If you want to get away and unwind travel to Deer Valley Ranch. I had a wonderful stay. This is a cabin in the great outdoors in the Colorado Rockies with scenic views and plenty of fresh air. If you want horseback riding, hiking, biking, fishing, skiing or just relaxing in front of the fire, this is your place.

We had a fabulous time at Deer Valley Ranch. We only had a couple of days to spend in the mountains after we had seen Colorado Springs and the Royal Gorge. It was an amazing, picturesque location, mule deer all over the grounds, right next to a mountain. It's within a day's trip to almost any where you would want to go in Colorado... St. Elmo, Cottonwood Lake, Ouray.... It's close enough to Buena Vista, a charming town where everyone's friendly to go pick up food. The people at Deer Valley were extremely friendly and accomodating. The cabin was your perfect idea of Colordo... elk head, fireplace, comfy with everything you need... horses... I can't say enough. We will use this as our central location next time we come and not pop in and out of hotels. There are plenty of hikes to do also right at Deer Valley... we didn't even have time to do the Hot Springs... very family friendly.

Room Tip: We would have booked earlier to chose Futurity... can't remember the exact name just b/c the vie...

My wife and I spent a much needed weekend getaway alone in a cabin at the Ranch. Space and time will not allow me to describe how perfect the experience was.
We loved our time there so much that we decided to bring our children, 17 & 9 years old, out on another weekend just to see if it would fly. It seemed to affect them the same way it did us. We read books in front of the fire. We played games. We laughed a lot. We spent time at the stables. We hiked on the property; the trails and views are stunning and well-maintained. We drug ourselves out of the cabin to the nearby ghost town, then hurried back to our retreat lol. We brought a crock-pot and cooked and ate at the table in our cabin!! We fed deer from our deck. Both daughters expressed that they didn't want to leave, and that they would return anytime. (Again, these girls are 17 & 9, and from the city. We were blown away :)) We relaxed, bonded, and thoroughly enjoyed and appreciate the setting and the staff. The staff of Deer Valley Ranch treated us more like returning family than clients. They are kind, generous, invisible unless needed, and just seem like "real" people with positive attitudes. The property is quiet, and convenient to town if anything was forgotten. My wife and I travel considerably and both strongly recommend Deer Valley Ranch for couples and families. We enjoy it enough to have purchased in advance 4 additional complete weekends to use as our getaway destination. I guess that's the real review.

What a great place to stay - conveniently located near Monarch, Ski Cooper, & Mt Princeton Hot Springs. We've visited Mt Princeton for years and never knew the ranch was even there. Clean (can you say immaculate?) and spacious cabins, lovely hot tub, and friendly folks - what more could you ask for? And, they welcome dogs (for some cabins) - even better! The kids were fascinated with the 50s decor, and although they wanted a TV in the cabin (thank you, not one there) - they haven't stopped talking about our stay. We will make this a repeat place to visit for years to come!

Room Tip: The Turret cabin takes dogs. There are two other options, but I don't know the names!

This was my second off-season stay at Deer Valley Ranch and I couldn't have been more pleased. I'm so glad the ranch is open year 'round and that rental cabins are available for just a weekend.

We stayed in the Whitehorn cabin which was perfect with two bedrooms. The real fireplace was great to have, as I only have a gas log fireplace in Denver suburbia.

We drove into St. Elmo twice - first to take professional photos of the town and the second day we went snow-shoeing. Chalk Creek Canyon is beautiful in the wintertime but I would not recommend driving it in a just a regular car.

The staff is so very friendly and caring and are such a treat to deal with. Thanks for everything!

These cabin's really are all a family needs to unwind. Being a mom of a 4 year old boy, this was perfect to get him away from all of the technologies that surround us. He learned how a real fireplace works, saw deer roaming by our window, sat at a kitchen table for meals (instead of in front of a tv) and also go to experience playing in a stream in the dead of winter (the hot springs)! It was so quiet and peaceful! The views are beyond words. This was a perfect weekend get-away from the normal routine. This is something we cannot wait to do again!
