If you've ever wanted to travel to the top of Pike's Peak and you're not into hiking or biking, there's no better way than taking the Pikes Peak Cog Railway. The cars are spacious and every seat has a great view. There is a guide on the speaker that explains all the sights as you travel up and down the mountain. One word of advice: Bring a jacket and some gloves it gets mighty cold at the summit even in the summer. Another bit of advice: To avoid altitude sickness bring either two small bottles of water or one large bottle and drink one bottle slowly on the way up and one slowly on the way down. You'll be glad you did. Make sure the weather forecast calls for clear skies otherwise you won't get much of a view at the summit.

We were visiting family and decided to take the pikes peak cog railway on the spur of the moment. We were glad we did as it was a wonderful experience. The ride up was slow but the views spectacular. We had a guide that told us about the history of the area which was very interesting. Although the little facility at the top of the mountain was a bit outdated, the ride was definitely worth it. You can see such a long distance, even to Kansas according to the guide.

Great view over Colorado in clear weather but tends to be foggy during winter. Be prepeared for cold weather and dress warm

After visiting Manitou Springs for many years, I went on the Cog Railway for the first time. There were teen kids in our travel party. My advice- get on the internet and read all about this before you do it, so you will know what to expect. Do call and make reservations in advance- we did it two days before and that was good enough. Luckily they do have a huge free parking lot. Do use the restroom facilities before your ride up to the top. If you order food and drink before your ride, know that you better finish it. Supposedly they do not allow food and drink on the train, except bottle water that they sell. You should have water with you while going UP bc of the altitude change, etc. Non of us had any problems during the ride up or down. The train did go to the top. I believe we had about 45 minutes before the trip down. It was a great time to take some photos- great views. Inside the facility who will find restrooms, snack bar items and misc. If they are still selling the donuts....they taste o.k. The kids wanted to eat them bc they had heard if you don't eat one it will "shrink" by the time you get back down to the bottom, bc of altitude. Well, all of the donuts were eaten at the top so who knows about the donut story. It is a beautiful ride both up and down. Remember, there are NO restroom facilities on the cog railway. I would say that it is something to do at least once, especially with kids. But honestly, if vacationing at another time of year, I would be tempted to do it again to experience it with snow. Fun. If you go to the cog website, you might find some coupons to print off.

The ride up and down was both entertaining and informative thanks to our conductor Kevin who made the whole trip more lively! I do recommend bringing a snack or drink or buying one from the gift shop at the bottom though, at the top the soda machine didn't work and there was hardly any snacks made. The COG does not operate the summit house so its not a blemish on them. But it was an awesome experience with a great conductor! Oh and definitely bring a camera to take lots of photos! Lots of great things to see just dress warm too! Much colder up at the top than in town!
