My wife and I really enjoyed the climb up, but it is no joke! We are flat-landers and we were only in CO a few days when we took the challenge. It was very satisfying to complete it to the top! We took Barr trail coming down as the locals suggested.

This is a great hike. It can be for all levels but you should know your goals before you go because it is challenging. Just finishing this one is amazing and the views are spectacular. If you are vertically challenged like me, there are a few places where you have to almost grapple over the steps but if you keep thinking like the Winter Warlock and put one foot in front of the other, you will make it up with a big smile on your face. There is plenty of room to pause on your way up for a breath, some water and to enjoy the view. The more you do it the easier it gets but that is true in many areas, this one should not be your introduction to Colorado hiking. Get acclimated first and bring lots of water. It is a great short cut if you are hiking up Pikes Peak but a great workout for stairs and run/jog down Barre Trail. Parking is much easier now but spots fill quickly.

We were looking forward to the Incline after reading about it...a 2000 foot elevation change in 1 mile! Wow...We were using this as a trainer for a Pikes Peak hike in a few days. After arriving in Manitou Springs Sunday eve we went up the Incline the following morning. A tough but great way to get the blood flowing. Not for everyone...the trick is to keep moving, however slow to keep your heart-rate up and consistant. Stopping all the time and having your heart-rate bouncing is a great workout but it does make it even tougher. Of course don't do this hike if you aren't in decent shape...maybe do just part of it to get the idea and work up to the whole thing...especially considering the high elevation that most people are not used to.

A group of us left early one morning and set out to climb the Manitou incline. It was the perfect combination of challenge and fun. You climb 2,000 ft in one mile. Most of our group did it in 58 minutes. Some felt a little elevation sickness but just took stops along the way and at the top recovered quickly. Nice little hike back down. Very unique experience and one we are glad we didn't miss!

Having read TA before going, I had an idea of what to expect. It was just as others had described. You will most likely have a love hate relationship with this experience. This is the hardest workout I have had in a very long time and I work out frequently and consistently. It was, however, a great experience and one I appreciate having accomplished. I suggest you don't look up or down but focus on one step after another and take many shade breaks if you can find any shade. This takes determination! Go early and try to beat the heat. Drink lots of water and something with electrolytes and have a snack when you get there before staring the trek down on the steep gravely trail. Talk to others along the way and offer support and encouragement as you will appreciate those who offer it to you!
