We had booked a weekend with meals included but decided to leave after first night.

It was simply a big disappointment. The place did not correspond at all their website and were told only when arrived that there was nor petting farm neither horses. So no really a point going to a ranch with a child, is there? And we paid full price, 150 dollars per night.

We were staying in the main lodge, very old and not clean. Carpets looked like 50 years old.

The food was terrible but must say that most of the personnel was friendly.

Hi this review was given before we purchased the property feb 2015. We have done many many changes to the place and still have thousands to go. It is a family owned business and a review like this is not helpful for our future. Would you consider deleting it? It sounds like we aren't a great match as we are a rustic ranch that wasn't well taken care of. It's unfortunate that trip advisor effects our business before we bought it. Hope you have a blessed life and find places to get away that are life giving to you.

We went to Peaceful Valley for a wedding with a group of about 40 people. The cabins are big and nicely put together - but low in accessories (no iron, no cork screw or bottle opener -- had to ask at the front desk, where they were more than happy to find them for us, but it was odd that the kitchens in the cabins didn't have any utensils -- they do have hairdryers though). No TV in the rooms, and only Verizon cell phone service is available so it's truly a 'get-away' place. However, the food was great, the place was really clean, the horses were well looked after and the pool and hot-tubs well maintained. Definitely rent a car and don't limit yourself by just doing the shuttle bus. Also altitude sickness can be common -- bring medicine just in case!

I have stayed at two other guest ranches and this one was a big disappointment. At the other two ( one in Colorado and one in Idaho) there was a nice lodge with a front porch with views. This ranch's lodge was rundown and tacky. Instead of wood floors, there was carpeting that looked to be at least 20 years old and in need of some deep cleaning. There was no porch or mountain views although the back of the lodge faced the creek. The cabin we stayed in was similarly tacky and in need of updating. Again the old indoor/outdoor type carpet which was in need of a deep cleaning. In our bedroom the screen did not completely cover the opening in the window, allowing moths to enter the cabin. Fortunately there were no mosquitos. In the morning after our first night I found a spider in the sink and a dead bug in the shower.
The meals were only one hour 8-9am in the morning, 12-1 for lunch and 6-7 in the evening. Every meal was buffet style. At the other ranches the meals were served family style and were excellent. The food here was mostly acceptable (just) however one day the food was inedible. Except for the cook, I did not find the staff to be particularly helpful or friendly. My kids and husband enjoyed the riding but they did not rave about it like they did with the other ranches we visited.
For the price ($375 a night which did not include the riding) this place fell way short of expectations.

Family reunion of 47 people ages one to 93. We were given a schedule of meals and what to expect and they did not come through. First nite many people were coming in after dinner and they asked if they could make up dinners, the food was there people, and they could not. The chef gave bags of trail mix from the gift shop for dinner. Second nite we were promised prime rib and salmon, we were taken to their off site bar b que area for burgers and brats. When a family member asked if he could stay in the restaurant and have the promised prime rib and salmon he was told no. Third nite we were told a "creek side bar b que." They over booked and put us in the swimming pool, which meant eating our dinner with the subtle smell of chlorine. We then were given 90 minutes around the campfire that was to be ours the entire evening due to their error and at 9 pm they threw water on the campfire and said it was over. So much for quality family time.
Not well kept up, lights dimmed, its a fire trap, only one staff member was nice and helpful and he was brand new. Food very poor, they don't believe in real vegetables lots of starch and meat was very unappealing.
Oh and their internet was down. Oh and it was over $200 a nite.

I'm amazed at the positive reviews this place gets. Although the support staff is nice, the manager was very unfriendly and unwelcoming. The facility is rundown. The only plus is that it's located near beautiful places. There is no view from the lodge itself. The food is generous, but not good.

Was what our 4 1/2 year old said after we left the ranch. A marvelous place for a family retreat with kids - yes it is rustic, but you will eat well, enjoy nature, bond with other guests, get to know the entire staff, learn to ride, enjoy hiking, fishing and nature, all just 90 minutes west of Denver.

Children's programs were the highlight of the ranch. Kids were broken into age 4-5, 6 to 9 and 10-12. There were two or three kids in each age group, so they got lots of personal attention from their councilor - college aged women or those in their mid 20s. Kids were kept busy from sun rise to bed time. Fishing, petting zoo, arts and craft, making candles, ice cream, apple sauce, making samores, riding horses, swimming in the in door pool. Those under six do not ride alone. Those six and over can ride alone and are given an hour long orientation before going off on trail rides, usually 10 to 15 riders for one to three hour rides.

In terms of technology, Verizon cell-phones worked the best here. There was a desk top computer in the coffee area and a HD/satellite tv in the lounge, but folks rarely used either - instead people came for the riding, the hiking and the family time.

Food was served buffet style. Breakfast at 8, lunch at noon, dinner at 6. Our son has food allergies and we alerted the ranch ahead of time and met with the cook a few minutes after we arrived. At each meal there was a seperate offering just for him, along with children's food. Later in the week a conference was in attendance and I noticed a vegetarian offering for one of those guests. Not too many vacation destinations will take the time to customize a menu for one guest, but Peaceful Valley Ranch certainly did that.

Overall the councilors were what made this a great vacation spot. The kids loved them and they really cared for the children. We felt very comfortable in letting them take care of our children and the ranch isnt so large that you couldnt find your child within minutes if need be. All councilors carried walkie-talkies and were reachable during the day.

Trail rides were in the one to two hour category, but there were also 1/2 day, full day and overnight rides as well. Generally you were with the same horse every day and the stable hands, wranglers and guides were attentive to the needs of the guests who were learning to ride.

Overall a wonderful family vacation, unique and well worth looking into.

Our family has officially had the best vacation ever. Our trip to PVR was nothing short of perfect. The trip consisted of me, my husband, our daughter and granddaughter (12 years old). When we checked in we were given a complete tour of the lodge and settled into our cabin, called Wolf Creek. What a wonderful place! It had 3 bedrooms and 2 baths, an upstairs and downstairs porch. Just behind us was the St. Vrain River, which was absolutely wonderful to fall asleep to when we kept the window cracked open!

The cabin is clean and comfortable and is appropriately furnished with comfortable chairs, beds and a large dining table which we used to play cards (when we had time!). There is housekeeping service daily in each cabin. The kitchen was sparsely furnished, with only a sink, coffee pot, microwave and fridge. There were plastic disposable cups for coffee along with a box that had coffee, creamer, sugar, stirrers, etc. While it would have been nice to have actual coffee cups, it wasn’t a necessity. When it comes right down to it, you are fed 3-squares a day at the lodge, so you really needed the kitchen only for the occasional snack or early morning coffee. Now, you need to be aware that this is a CABIN. In the WOODS. This is not the Hilton. If you want the Hilton, stay at a hotel. If you’re going to complain because it’s not fully stocked or there’s some peeling paint, stay at the Hilton. This is a ranch, for heaven’s sake. You don’t spend much time in the cabin anyway – you’re too busy doing other things, and I personally would rather them spend the money and the time creating activities for my family!

The food was AMAZING with plenty of choices, something different every day and an occasional meal on the mountain or at the river (with swimming and tubing!) and a yummy farewell dinner. There is always a kid’s selection available, i.e. chicken nuggets, pizza, PB&J, etc. Alcohol is available at the ranch. In accordance with Colorado law, you can have your own alcohol in your cabin or lodge room, but in the lodge proper outside alcohol cannot be consumed. It must be purchased from the lodge. They also have a fishing pond next to the lodge and if you catch a fish the staff will cook it up for your dinner that night – now how fun is that?!

They have counselors for each age group, and the kids can choose to go with the counselors for the day, a half day or a portion of the day. The groups are split into two-year groups (i.e. 4-6, 8-10, 10-12, etc.).The parents are welcome to attend, but the counselors are marvelous (with many of them in college taking courses in elementary, middle or high school education) and it’s so good for the kids to have their own “alone time” with kids their own age. Kids are taken on their own horseback rides (once again, parents can tag along if they wish), play games, do crafts, and sometimes just sit around and talk! They encourage the kids to participate in every aspect of the ranch, including feeding the animals at the petting zoo, learning to saddle horses, etc. Our granddaughter was shy at first and wouldn’t leave our side; however once she finally got with her group we had a hard time pulling her away from her new friends! Her counselor, Caitlin, really knew how to encourage her to participate and would seek us out to invite us to the different events they were doing, enticing our DGD to finally join in.

The activities list is vast, and they post sign-up sheets at the front desk every day for the next day’s events. You can pick and choose to participate as you’d like. We signed up for everything available – and we weren’t sorry at all!! I highly recommend the chili-cookoff even if you don’t like chili! Everyone is split into teams (and no, not with your own family – you get to play with other guests at the ranch, and even ranch employees!). A “cook” is chosen from your group, and everyone else has to play games to win “money” to get ingredients for your chili – what a BLAST it was!! The end-of-the-week rodeo is done by staff and guests alike. The kids have “rodeo practice” the day before so they can perform little things they are taught by their counselors and wranglers. They have games the guests join in and awards and ribbons are handed out at the talent show that evening.

They have horseback rides available every day, rain or shine (although the ride will be cancelled if there is lightening), and rides are done by age group or ability. There are rides available for the casual trail-rider, for groups who want to an occasional trot or lope, or even all-out running rides. Before you even arrive at the ranch, a questionnaire is sent to you to find out what type of riding you do (or have done in the past), what you feel your riding experience is, and what you’d like to learn (if anything) while you are at the ranch. With that information, the wranglers pick an appropriate horse for you and that is the horse you ride your entire vacation. Orientation is done for EVERY guest rider at the ranch, whether you have ridden before or not. The wranglers are so much fun, and it won’t be long before they know you and your horse! They also have cowboy boots for you to wear so you don’t have to buy your own. Kids 12 and under must wear riding helmets. Some of the kids brought their skateboard helmets to use, otherwise helmets are provided for kids and adults (like me) who prefer to wear helmets.

For those who don’t ride horses (or who’s bum is just sore from riding!), there is access to all of the activities off-site, such as Breakfast on the Mountain, The Three Bears Picnic or the ride to Jamestown by car or wagon, so nobody is ever left out. My husband and I took the day tour of the Rocky Mountain National Park and our guide, Fred, was a wealth of knowledge and quite entertaining.

Our granddaughter didn’t want to leave – she said she felt like she was leaving her family. Every single staff member – from the ranch hand to the owner is friendly, helpful, and so much fun! They really treat you as family, and they do many of the activities with you so you get to know them better.

I highly recommend this ranch; it is well worth the time and money to check it out. We’re already planning our trip back in two years!
