The Dam Store, is a great place to buy Colorado items, neat location by the Big Thompson River. Visit it at least once a year.

This store is unique and the first store you see going up to Estes Park. This store has weathered 2 floods and is still standing. There is a lookout tower you can go up into and view the surroundings, it is wonderful!

Well we were on our way to Estes Park, but the floods have closed the roads. Intrigued by "road open to Dam Store" and ".99 Elk Jerky". So we went. We got the jerky, we climbed the tower, we got the inside scoop from the locals, and we got the photo. We had a great time!

We thought this would be a cute store with the name and all and instead it is filled with all the same souvenier crap you find for CO that is probably all made in China. They could have done so much more wtih this store but instead chose to sell lots of cheap junk you can probably find in Walmart.

Driving the scenic route from Estes Park to Denver, we stopped because a large sign advertises a free view of "the waterfall" from a tower structure built. We wondered what waterfall because none is visible from the road.
Good marketing ploy. You have to go through the souvenir shop to get to the tower, and most T-shirts are about $8 - a lot cheaper than Estes Park's tourist shops, so most people probably make purchases.
The waterfall isn't anything spectacular - man-made from the dam, but climbing the tower to look provides a moment of amusement.
Warning about asking to use the restroom. The indoor one is "broken" - whatever that means, and they have two port-a-potties in the parking lot, which happen to be the most vile facilities I've ever set foot in. Their indoor restroom has obviously been "broken" for quite sometime because, according to the servicing sign on the inside of the porta-johns, the last service date was July 1st - eight weeks prior to our stop. The toilets were almost full to the top, and flies hovered over the contents like rabid dogs. Don't stop here if your objective is using a restroom.
Not worth stopping for any reason.
