We hit this great little pastry shop the day it opened and have treated ourselves a few times since. The pastries are wonderful and a far cry from the usual sickly sweet, over-processed "danish" that passes for a continental style pastry in the USA. Cake is also available by the slice - we are talking about nice, pretty, but very ho hum butter-cream filled variations on the same theme. These are not the cakes one finds in a great konditerai like those in Germany and Melbourne, Australia but we can't have it all and I guess folks who have never had the real think would not realize what they missing.
The pastries make up for the lack of serious cake artistry. They are delicious - the almond bear claw, the pecan buns, the cheese and cherry....oh, yum!
The big flaw with this cafe is the lack of real espresso. Those automatic espresso and cappuccino machines simply do not cut it for customers who like real coffee with their pastries. As a consequence, we only go in to pick up pastries to take home, instead of sitting down for a coffee. That is a shame, since the atmosphere is pleasant.
Cafe Romana is located in an unappealing strip mall, but do take the time to drive around the back entrance in, and make the most of this new pastry shop so that it stays in business. Longmont really needs this type of eaterie.
