This privately owned full sized train is for you. The seats are arrange for optimal viewing. The staff are courteous and happy to that you are there to enjoy what the train represents. We took the 3 hour trip today to see the changing of the Aspens. While we missed the best of the change the ride, the train, the depot person, the conductor, the other passengers, the weather, the beauty of the valley and the mountains were all and more of what you want when outside to enjoy who you are in the universe. The owner was on board but we didn't meet her. We were in the covered car with its big windows. You can chose the open car. The price is right. The train stops at a water tower to stretch your legs and get more pictures. I just read some of the less enthusiastic reviews. You have to remember this is a train that connect Denver and Leadville back in the gold mining days. It travels slow, you can see the ground through the floor boards from where we sat. It isn't an amusement ride. We saw deer and two wild lamas on the ride. The conductor was more than willing to talk to you about the area and history.

Even though this is powered by a diesel loco, (Steam lover) it was still a great trip up the valley. A very friendly and dedicated crew made for a fun and interesting trip. Well worth the price! Leave time before or after to visit the Mining Museum, it adds to the trip.

This was the first thing I did in Colorado. The train ride fairly long (1-1/2 maybe) and the scenery was varied. The narrator talked mostly about mining, which was interesting. There was water and snacks available for purchase and you are permitted to bring your own food aboard. Also, there is a bathroom on the train. It was a beautiful trip up, and down, the mountain. The gift shop also had some nice things at reasonable prices.

The train backs up the mountain for 9 miles, caboose first. It stops near the top, 15 minutes,at an old water tower for passengers to get out and take some pictures. The train then goes back down the same track, engine first this time. Took 2 1/2 hours and waaay too long. On the mountain side, terrain rose and all one saw was stone, rocks and vegetation. On the down side, scenery was beautiful, majestic peaks in the far distance, and just when one wanted to snap a pictures, very tall pine trees blocked the picture. Narration was "okay", but nothing special. To us, a waste of the $35/person fee and our time.

We wanted to go on this train ride because we thought it would be both beautiful and entertaining. While the scenery was gorgeous, the narration left a lot to be desired. For example, the website advertises that you'll hear about "...the fascinating history of the railroads, ghost stories and tales of the wild", but we heard nothing of the sort. After the novelty of riding on a train wears off, the ride can get a little long and boring for both kids and adults. This could and should be so much more entertaining for the price ($35/adult, $20/child).
