“Bad Attitude at Altitude”
Reviewed August 26, 2012

We have stayed in the Leadville Hostel for our team camp twice. The owners seemed excited and welcoming to us when they heard that we would completely fill their rooms, however, upon our arrival they treated my group of young adults like 10 year olds. They would make mean rude comments about how the kids were doing everything wrong. They were first told that only 13 kids were allowed to eat at one time, but if they wanted to, they could take a plate outside and eat at the picnic tables. When more then 13 kids came they were treated rudely by the cook and female owner, even though they offered to eat outside. The tension created made everyone at the hostel feel uncomfortable. The rooms were fine. The Woman owner was not friendly at all and the man had a strange sense of humor that made you feel really uncomfortable. They don't treat young people very well. Beware if you have kids attending the hostel with you as they will probably be treated similarly.
If we ever come back to Leadville, we will NOT be staying at this hostel!

It was the first time we ever stayed in the Hostel and it will not be the last! We stayed in a room with a private bath that was clean and comfortable. We happened to be in Leadville on a VERY busy weekend. The Hostel was bustling with people but the owners, Bill and Kathy, had everything under control and organized! The price was reasonable and we were even able to purchase an all you can eat breakfast of fresh fruit, scrambled eggs, french toast, OJ and coffee for $5.00 a person!

My sister and I visited this hostel for a few days while exploring a couple of the local 14ers. Overall, the experience was pleasant and we'd be happy to return again.

This place is stowed on a residential corner of Leadville, a few blocks from the main strip of the town. There is plenty of parking in front of the building and the walk to downtown is relatively painless, provided you acclimate well to the air in the 10,000+ feet of elevation (Leadville is the highest incorporated city in America). We were welcomed by a light late-summer sprinkle as we walked in via the comfy front porch.

Inside there are a plethora of mostly "don't-do" signs that, while keeping the place very well-organized, take away from the homey experience the colorful rooms and cozy living areas aim to provide. My sister and I stayed in different dorms, which we both found relatively comfortable and quiet (per the rules). Plusses for electrical outlets near the bunks and large lockers (with refundable deposit). But check your key... it may open multiple lockers.

The kitchen and the bathrooms were very clean. But plan ahead if you are leaving early, as sink/counter space can get a little crowded as folks wake up and prepare for their hikes. Most of the guests were friendly fellow backpackers, so even if space is limited folks seem willing to compromise.

The service was fine overall. As stated earlier, the owner is an alpha type who doesn't always employ courtesy to the greatest of his abilities. But his right hand man (whose name escapes me), a grizzled, ball-cap-wearing gentleman was extremely helpful and had a great sense of humor. I'd recommend going through him for the necessaries, if possible.

Also, this is a great base location if you are hiking Mts. Elbert, Massive, La Plata, etc. Gorgeous views!

The best place to stay in Leadville by far, in fact, probably the best place to stay in Colorado. The owners make the place more than the physical accomodations, which are very comfortable. They create a feeling that you are always welcome, always go the extra mile, in every way. I have been coming here for over 8 years, started when my son was 5, and they are great with kids. Yes they have rules, but they should have rules. Not sure how some experiences posted on this site could imply they are not good with kids, or are rude. They are anythng but rude. They would give you the shirt off their back. Sounds like people like that should just stay in Vail or Aspen, because they just don't get it... Wouldn't be any fun if everyone got it anyway. If you're adventurous, non-materialistic, and want an experience you will cherish for a lifetime, this is the place. I'll be asking for a job application myself.

I have stayed here on several other occasions with friends and have always been warmly greeted and made to feel welcome. The owners are friendly and helpful and run a clean and orderly house. There are several private rooms and several gender specific bunk rooms. There are plenty of entertainment options including televisions, vcrs, computers(at a cost, free wifi), and even a pool table. If you are looking for a clean and comfortable bed at an inexpensive rate(18 for a bunk, 60 for private room), this place is a great value.

We stayed in Leadville Hostel for spring break with our kids. Although the owners say that babies and kids are welcome, they sure did not act like it. The rooms were ok, nothing to write home to mom about. Really tacky wilderness wallpaper. They cook food for you at extra cost per meal and the food isnt that great either. The Woman owner was not friendly at all and the man had a strange sense of humor that made you feel really uncomfortable. When we tried to check out they made us feel like they didnt have time for us and kept telling us to "come back in 45 mins" when we were ready to leave then. Its a nice little house (with TONS of rules) but Dont wast your money here, Leadville has other nice places to stay that would be a lot more relaxing. And to the owners, relax a little will ya!
