“Comfortable condo in the woods”
Reviewed November 3, 2012

Stayed one night in mid-October with my husband and son. Well-furnished and -equipped condo located a couple of miles to the north-east of Leadville. (Luckily we spotted in time that the confirmation invoice had no address or directions but were able to access the website from my Blackberry. For info: going north, head west on I24 then take a left onto Country Road 99). The office closes at 5 but the key is left in a mailbox. Also had problems getting the main space heated. Reported this to the office in the morning.

I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Leadville. This place has it all. No a/c, but it's not needed. Super quiet, safe, feels like home. No issue with iPhone not receiving a signal, signal was strong, consistent.

Room Tip: I stayed in Southpaw 2A, great cabin. Right across the street is a hiking trail that goes down to th...

Showed up in Leadville late afternoon with a copy of my confirmation e-mail after booking online-- oops -- there was no address for the resort in the confirmation e-mail. Asked at a local shop, was given roundabount directions, eventually found it. Room was freezing after about half an hour of turning on the heat, called the first number on a list of emergency numbers, voice mailbox was full, called the second woman on the list, was told cabin had underfloor heating and would take two hours to heat up. Went to dinner, came back, cabin still freezing, called again, maintenance man was sent over, turns out he hadn't turned on a boiler because, according to him "it was very hot last week". (No it wasn't. I checked before coming. It was freezing.) Heat started working after a couple of hours, but I was woken up at midnight by the bedside alarm clock radio going off (I hadn't touched the thing) which was just as well because room was hot as a sauna at that point. If you're staying for several days, these first day problems don't bother you, I suppose. The cabin itself was very nice and the location was beatiful. Management, or lack of it, was the issue.

Dear Grand West Guest:

Our apologies for the inconvenience you encountered with your stay at our establishment.
Your arrival on Sunday, Sept. 18 was the day after an unusually cold Saturday. We do keep
the temperature in the units, at that time of the year, at approximately 65 degrees. The in-
floor radiant heat does take time to increase in temperature. I understand that the
maintenance person did personally come to the unit and adjust the heat for you. Since
you were a guest for only one night and I did not get a chance to visit with you prior to
you leaving early the next morning; we could have possibly did more to rectify your complaint.
The housekeeper did report to me that the unit was pleasantly warm when it was checked at 9 AM.

These condos were wonderful. Very clean, quiet, roomy, well supplied, plenty of parking, etc.

My only complaint, which is now almost a necessity, is that the cell connection was nil (AT&T) and the internet connection was very spotty. If it worked, it was very slow.

For cell reception, we had to drive to Safeway (about 5 minutes away.) We were in town for the Leadville 100 and having cell connection was very important. No other complaints. Everything else was wonderful.

I last stayed in Leadville in 2003 when I used the Columbine Inn, this time it was unavailable. Based on reviews of the Grand West Resort I booked a 2 bedroom cabin (Southpaw 2A) for a 3 night stay with my wife and daughter. The resort is located just outside Leadville along a quiet local road, despite most of the other cabins being occupied it could not have been more peaceful. Our stay was fantastic, the cabin was well equipped, spotlessly clean, very cosy and represented much better value than 2 hotel rooms (which we would have needed). Although there are many good places to eat in/near Leadville, because of the setting and facilities we chose self cater and enjoy the tranquility. The weather varied between sunshine and thunderstorms during our stay, regardless we enjoyed every minute and would strongly recommend the Grand West Resort to anyone wanting simple but very comfortable accommodation, for a quiet break in a stunning setting. For those who have not spent anytime at altitude do be aware of Mountain Sickness which can affect anyone regardless of age/fitness, follow the guidance, do not be overly ambitious regarding activities and take time to aclimatise.

Room Tip: Please Each cabin at the Grand West is independantly owned so equipment levels may differ but the lo...

We had the pleasure of staying here during our recent trip to Colorado. The log lodge-style condo was absolutely beautiful and comfortable. The large mountain rock fireplace was welcome as we had snow while we were there. Comfortable beds and a whilrlpool tub were welcome after our hikes. It is out of town about 1 1/2 miles and is very quiet and peaceful, but close enough to Leadville for quick trips to Safeway or restaurants. The view off the front porch of the high peaks was breathtaking. Probably THE nicest place we have stayed in Colorado and we go every year. We plan to go back next year and stay longer.
