First off, just to be clear, this is a bakery, not a restaurant. You can eat cafe-style and they do have beverages and a limited selection of meal-like items (ham and cheese croissants, for example), but primarily baked sweets.
This place is amazing. I grew up in Lakewood and only discovered it in the last 7 years or so. I am not surprised when other locals have never noticed or heard of it. It used to be inconspicuously situated in a dilapidated strip mall in Green Mountain. With only a slight upgrade to very cheap looking stand-alone building with a dirt parking lot on the corner of old Kipling St. and Jewell Ave., it is now busier than ever. Don't let the exterior fool you. This is a top-notch, full service bakery.
They have an amazing selection of prepared items: breads, danishes, pastries, stuffed croissants, cookies, and lots of other whimsical looking delicacies that could have you spending an hour just asking, "What is that one? And that one? And that one?..." My advice--if it looks good, it is good. You can't go wrong. Almond lovers will be in heaven--they have an incredible selection of almond-based items; marzipan galore.
They occasionally have pre-made cakes in stock. Cakes are where they really excel and, I suspect, few who frequent the place have actually experienced them. My wife and I fell in love with the Othello cake several years ago when I picked one up for her birthday. It is a heavenly multi-layer white cake with whipped frosting and raspberry preserves between and a thick sheet of decorated marzipan to top it off. I special ordered a full sheet Othello last week for a large event and it was a sight to behold. The baker was justifiably very proud of his creation as he paraded it out to the front counter for me with at least 10 other customers gawking in awe. It was the highlight of the party; numerous guests inquired where I got it and make comments like "this is the best cake I've ever had" and "my wedding cake wasn't even this good!" Amazing stuff. And for the price, I felt criminal.
Stop by for a morning treat, but don't forget them when it comes time for special occasions. The Taste of Denmark is sure to delight.
