Typically good road with very few areas where you might find any wash-boarded spots. Really saves time as you go between these areas -- well worth taking, find for a car -- 4 wheel drive not needed at all!

I've had the pleasure of driving this road a few times and it never disappoints. I've seen moose two times! It is a lovely drive, that is perfectly safe for your average SUV, but always make sure to have a spare tire, as there are lots of jagged rocks in the road.

Beautiful drive, lots of wildlife! Don't worry about needing 4x4 or offroad during summer it is an easy drive.

"Lake City cutoff" is the local name of two short cuts across the Blue Mesa, between 149 and Hwy 50. One route literally takes you over Blue Mesa, Road 867, and the other takes you across Pine Creek Mesa, Road 25. Both provide a beautiful view out over the Reservoir and surrounding mountains. However, the view is not very different from just turning onto 149 towards Lake City, crossing the bridge west of Gunnison. 149 is paved and two lanes, those two roads are not. Use caution after any rain or snow, some places are impassable on the short cuts unless you have 4WD. Road 25 is closed during grouse mating season, both are closed wintertime to through traffic. There is no cell reception regardless of which way you go, so travel prepared.
