What to know what life in Lake City was like when Lake City was born? This is a charming museum that has wonderful artifacts and stories from long ago. The building itself is a gem. Over the years, this place continues to improve. There is an extensive outdoor area that continues to tell the story of life in Lake City.

One of the best things is all the special tours and living history demonstrations. These are spectacular and enjoy going to them year after year. They are posted at their front door during summer months.

Don't miss the gift shop. Lots of cool things can be found, especially for history lovers.

The Hinsdale County Museum is a Hidden Gem in Lake City. The museum is small, but contains a wealth of information about Lake City, mining history, the history of area tourism and artifacts from Colorado's most famous cannibal, Alferd Packer. Museum docents are knowledgeable and friendly and the exhibits contain both permanent displays as well as rotating temporary exhibits. You can visit a nineteenth century rail car, see a horse drawn firefighting pump wagon, and view a reconstructed blacksmith's house. Children will love playing in the outdoor playhouse and adults will enjoy visiting the wildflower garden. The museum is professionally done and is one of the best small museums I've visited. Take the time to go on one of the Hinsdale County Historical Society's tours that start at the museum. You can choose from a historic district walking tour or a cemetery tour offered weekdays seasonally. Also not to miss is the famous GHOST TOUR. The tour begins at dusk and takes visitors through the town of Lake City while guides recount tales of specters based in history. I can' t say enough about this place. Give it a chance and visit.
