Latigo Dude Ranch
Reviewed June 23, 2009

Our family has just come back from our eighth year at Latigo, so clearly we are thrilled with the place. Our children were 10 and 8 when we first came-- ages at which they can benefit from the instruction of the wranglers to improve their horsemanship and get the most out of the riding experience. These are not nose-to-tail rides across a dusty plain, but rides where small groups go with a wrangler and learn as little or as much as they want to about horseback riding, all through spectacular scenery on the western slope of the Rockies. When we arrived, we knew next to nothing about riding. Now, although we ride but once a year (at Latigo), we feel very competent on horseback which allows us to take some more adventuresome rides and cover more of this beautiful place. Latigo's seclusion is a real plus as well. The ranch is essentially surrounded by national forest which the ranch accesses for trail rides. In all our years visiting we have seen about ten people not from the ranch itself. The staff takes care of all meals and housekeeping chores, so you can relax and enjoy the other guests, the scenery, the food and the peacefulness. The food is abundant and delicious. Since there are at most 30-35 guests per week, they can accommodate special requests and not just serve chow. You really feel included by everyone there. Latigo has a special hard-to-describe feeling (see the "soul" comment above). That should be something you are looking for if you go there. It is not a place where the kids play video games, and the adults go to the nightclub. It is a place where kids learn a lot about the natural world and adults don't have to worry about their kids. Hopefully, we will be going for a long time to come.

Date: January 5, 2009
We just returned from a fabulous five day winter family vacation at Latigo Trails Ranch outside of Kremmling, Colorado. At 9,000 ft. in the Rocky Mountains, the setting was spectacular and the snow plentiful.
In the summer this is a Dude Ranch, but in the winter they have
many miles of groomed trails for cross country skiing, skating, and snow shoeing.
We wanted a place to have a family winter vacation that would be kid friendly and comfortable and where we could learn some new winter sports.
We reached the ranch after a night in Denver. It took about 3 hours and was easy to find. Roads were well plowed. We found that renting a SUV in town was about 50% less than at the airport. We stayed at the Marriott Courtyard on the 16th Street Mall , so had lots of downtown Denver exploring time and ate at Teds Montana Grill which is a terrific place for families.
We wanted to have have separate sleeping cabins, but be close to each other. Three of us stayed in a 3 bedroom/1 bath cabin with a nice living room space and a cozy fireplace for the 6 of us to gather for evening board games. Our other kids and grandson stayed in another one bedroom cabin with a pull out in the living room. Kathie (one of the owners, and Jim's wife) was very helpful in helping us make our reservations and always there for our many questions about snow as it does not snow much where we live and we mostly own shorts and t-shirts.
We loved the fact that we could have all meals prepared by wonderful cooks, Randy and Lisa, who also are owners of the ranch. The three meals and all of Lisa's baked goods during the day kept our energy up to tackle all the snow fun. They took our orders for breakfast from a menu with lots of choices. Lunch was always warm to the tummy. For dinner there was a choice of two main items with fresh vegetables and homemade breads. Randy made a constant effort to make sure that our 12 year old grandson had food that he liked, including lots of whipped cream on his waffles.
We started with the cross country skiing and had a great lesson from Randy. Being new to cross country it was so nice to have the trail machine groomed with the tracks. This gave us the confidence to go out and try it on our own. We explored several of the lower trails, while other guests tackled the tough trails. Some of us also did several afternoons of snowshoeing. All ski and snowshoe gear was available for rent on site. The miles of trails are groomed almost daily by Jim, another owner, so that you can ski, or snowshoe, or hike on them. It was great because each family member could chose their own fun.. Our grandson was thrilled with the tubing and groomed sledding areas, as were we all. One hill was the ride of a life time and we even survived it. We were going to go to Steamboat Springs, but we were having so much fun that we never left the ranch.
The two families that own and run the ranch were more than hospitable. They were available at any time, answered lots of questions with smiles on their faces and as the week went on we felt like part of their families.
On a side note, we also spent time in their main lodge with card
games, puzzles and just enjoying the views. Lots of games and puzzles were available in the Social Hall as well as a pool table, foosball, ping pong and a jacuzzi.
Because it was winter, there was usually only 4-10 other people there and it felt like having our own home away from home.
While sitting on the cabin porch the extensive vistas were breathtaking. You could see forever. If no one was talking there was not a sound. We found the snow to be pristine undisturbed powder that was beautiful to look at. Colorado is spectacular all times of the year, but this year we had tons of fun in the snow with sunny days with a few snow flurries thrown in .Our family voted this vacation as the best so far. If you want to feel away from it all in spectacular setting with great food this is the place for you or your family. We met one family that had been coming for 20 years, that tells me it must be a consistently well run place.

Just returned from a fantastic week at Latigo Ranch!
What a really special place where you are made to feel like a guest but also one of the family. Jim, Kathie, Randy, Lisa and all the family and staff strive to ensure that your time at Latigo is everything you expect it to be, plus a bit more.
My wife and I visited from Scotland and whilst she has been used to horses I am a bit of a novice. Our time at the ranch included lessons, (which helped me greatly!), trail rides, working with cattle and an overnight camp trip. You are never on the same trail twice and the scenery has to be seen to be believed.
The hospitality, and in particular the food, is fantastic. Breakfast, lunch, afternoon cakes and dinner is first class, everyones choice of food is catered for.
I would not hesitate to recommend this guest ranch to others and we are already trying to plan a return visit!

Spent a week there with the family, 2 boys 12 & 13. Had a great time. Beautiful countryside with very nice accomidations. Food was Excellent and the host families were activly involved. We were not horse people before the trip but became very comfortable on them thanks to the excellent instruction of the staff. These are not nose to tail little trail rides. With thousands of acres of nation forest around them, you were riding somewhere new each ride. They will let you choose the type of riding you want to do whether walk, trot or lope depending on your comfort level. A long trip to the high country and an overnight camp out under the stars was a great educational adventure. topped of with a cattle round up and penning. There is a program for all ages from tots to adults. Very good web site. All inclusive pricing was very fair and even included gratuities for the staff. A very nice addition. It is about a 3 hour drive from Denver airport.

This is a fantastic find. We have visited three years in a row now and are still finding wonderful new things about this place and the surrounding areas. The accommodations are jsut right for us, not too ritzy but not too rustic either. The food is wonderful, much better than you might expect from a secluded ranch. The people are the best, very warm and friendly in a genuine way. We knew nothing about horeseback riding when we first went and now we feel pretty confident (though not expert) in our abilities. Latigo is surrounded on three sides by national forest land, so there is no development and no other ranches remotely near. The one odd thing is that driving there you feel as if you are in a desert. We were concerned that we'd be out in the sagebrush the whole time, but then you start driving higher and higher and soon you are surrounded by beautiful woods. The ranch has a gorgeous view of the mountains with the Continental Divide in the (far) distance. We recommend Latigo highly.
