Compared to other, somewhat more upscale resorts in the area I think A-Basin presents a very good value. They have very reasonably priced half-day lesson, lift ticket, and rental packages. I had not been skiing in a long time and this was my first time skiing in Colorado. I had a great instructor who was able to work very well with the group and give each person individual attention.
I would echo other comments about the altitude. A-Basin is pretty high up and I was struggling a bit after a half day. Even my friends who are more avid skiers and a bit more acclimated were having trouble. Give yourself a day or so to get used to the heights before overdoing it. Locals also recommended Copper Mountain for having lots of runs for beginner level skiers.

This is an older style ski area with all of the basic amenities one would expect, however, without some of the pretentious "glitz" found at some of the more developed ski resorts. We had great spring skiing, and more snow is on the forecast. Many of the other ski resorts in Summit County have already closed for the season, and A-Basin is projected to be open through mid-June.

So many folks i talked to in the area told me to avoid A-Basin because of its a smaller mountain with slow lifts. This is certainly true when compared of Copper, Keystone, and Breckenridge which are all in the area. Those mountains are huge and loaded with high speed quads. For me, i don't mind a slower lift ride. Especially when riding in powder all day which can be exhausting. As for the size of the mountain you wont find any 5-mile runs here but who wants them.? I found the runs to be perfect length. not too long and not too short.
I really liked driving right up to the base lodge in the morning and parking within spitting distance. No VIP parking costs or shuttle rides needed here. And the parking lot tailgate is a great way to have a relaxing lunch without the resort dining crowds and costs.
Oh, and the conditions here are usually better than anywhere else on the i-70 ski route.
The views are spectacular. At 13,000 feet its a true alpine skiing experience. Just be prepared for the effects of the elevation change if your from somewhere closer to sea level.
I spent a week in this area and snowboarded at all the nearby resorts. This was by the best riding and the most fun i had on the trip as well as the cheapest and least crowded.
If you are looking for apreskiing and hanging in the lodge don't go here but if you want all mountain fun and a relaxed atmosphere this is the place to be.

Fast lifts, many lifts, no crowds, great staff (except one lady with blonde curly hair in the ticket office! She is horrible! Ask for someone else to help you if you get her!), amazing food, amazing snow! Truly love it all! No complaints!

This ski area has a little bit of the reputation of being steep and for die hard skiers only. But there are some runs for everyone. The nearby rocky east wall makes it quite pretty. I hope they install one more lift in the future, hopefully a high speed one with good vertical drop.

Most importantly, they have very good instructors and their lessons are more affordable (keep in mind that the major Colorado resorts see lessons as a huge money maker, even if your kids - or yourself - end up in groups of 10).

The barbecue in the mountain cafeteria (not at the base) was really good food, and quite good value if you take a larger plate, esp. for a ski resort.

I don't think it is a place for an entire ski vacation (there is no lodging anyway), but it is definitely worth a trip if you are in the area.
