“Buffalo Bummer”
Reviewed March 4, 2014

We were happy to find plenty of room on a recent Sunday evening when we stopped in on our way back to Denver area after skiing for the weekend. Things started off so well. Our beer - Pick Ax Ale - was cold and delicious. But... the service?... Big time buffalo bummer. Sorry folks. But you have to act like you care... We paid $95 including tip for dinner for 5. This included only two beers total. The food was, well, meh... Fried onion rings were great. I should have stopped there. The burgers were average and the fries were cold.

“The Buffalo Provides a Taste of the Old West”
Reviewed January 17, 2014

Want to give those visiting “flatlanders” a treat to remember? Take them up to “the Buffalo” in Idaho Springs, Colorado. It’s only 30 miles west of Denver on I-70 and the trip provides a preview of what crossing the Rockies is all about.

The Buffalo Restaurant & Bar is a long time fixture of Idaho Springs and pre-dates all those new restaurants that have come along. But the original is still the best, with a great menu that features sweet prime Buffalo as burgers, steaks, chili or meatloaf. There are Mexican specials with a touch of buffalo and some unusual deli sandwiches such as the “Corned Buffalo Reubin” as well. Pizza is also featured and there is the buffalo meat lovers pizza and a variety of other toppings.

Don’t forget the beer. There is a wide selection of local and regional brews on tap or bottled. Wine, margaritas, mixed drinks; it’s all there and there are a variety of special pub drink and happy hour specials.

Part of the charm of the Buffalo is that it is an authentic saloon from the early mining days in Idaho Springs and the classic bar, pot belly stove, high ceilings are all still in place. Truly, visiting the Buffalo is like stepping back into the old west.

In my experience, wait staff is very good and takes considerable care explaining options and ensuring all goes well. On my last visit, the wait staff tipped me off on the delightful port-wine cheese that was one of the buffalo burger cheese selections. They are also more than willing to make substitutions as desired.

Capturing the sightseer and skier business is the main goal here. While locals are blessed to have a great restaurant like the Buffalo, it is those travelers that make the difference and management knows how to please.

Price of buffalo is not totally comparable to beef so don’t conclude that prices for a burger platter or out of line. I would say prices for most dishes and alcohol are inline with the going rate. Remember to that to please visitors and have a real treat, it’s worth an extra dollar or so. Don’t forget to visit their website for specials. Last I looked there was a 10% coupon for food.

“Bad Attitude, High Prices, but Good Food”
Reviewed January 3, 2014

After visiting the Buffalo Bill Museum at Lookout Mountain, we wanted to try a buffalo burger in Idaho Springs. The food was good. Deep friend mushrooms are excellent!
The waitress staff was rude and behaved like bored teenage girls who wished we would leave so they could relax. Everything seemed too much bother, and our waitress disappeared for long stretches of time.
The menu posted in the foyer lists amazing prices that are not at ALL accurate. Apparently, this menu is a historical artifact rather than an actual menu, so ignore it unless you're a history buff.

“Great Burgers!!”
Reviewed November 16, 2013 via mobile

Very unassuming & if you happen to be traveling through Idaho Springs Co I would say give this place a chance. The Ranch Burger is a good start and a side of chips is a full meal deal. My traveling partner had the Ruben and as well was a good choice. Service was outstanding and nothing was overlooked. A must stop!! Treat yourself. It was so worthy we purchased the ball cap.

We stopped in this neat little restaurant for lunch while out seeing the sites. We were not disappointed! The food was just wonderful and the service and atmosphere were great. I had the buffalo pattie melt...OMG...out of this world! My husband had the buffalo prime rib and he said that he had dreams about it. haha
Idaho Springs is a really neat little town...and visiting the Buffalo Bar is a MUST!
