“Stayed again on our way back through”
Reviewed October 11, 2013

While on a 2 week camping trip across the western states this September we stopped in Idaho Springs after dark after a long day of driving, so camping was not an option for that night. We felt very fortunate to happen upon the Argo and it's very helpful, friendly front desk staff. The young woman working at the desk that evening located an amazing room for us right on the Clear Creek. It was great to have a hot shower and kick back on the balcony with a glass of wine, listening to the creek flow by. Room was larger than usual hotel rooms, clean and comfortable. Breakfast is just danish, juice and coffee, as we were told when we checked in. A certificate with discounts at many local restaurants and attractions was given to us as well. We stayed here again on our way back to the Midwest, as we were very pleased with our first experience and the great people there, including Tommy who also works at the front desk. The second time there were no creek-side rooms available, so Tommy found us a very large 2 bedroom with 3 queen beds and a fireplace for only a few dollars more than we had paid for the creek side room. There are areas down by the creek for sitting and a fire ring complete with barbeque tools for guests to use. Great location, easy walk to the grocery store, restaurants and attractions. The people in town are very friendly and helpful as well. Truly enjoyed our stay in Idaho Springs. If you are expecting a fancy hotel and full hot breakfast this is not it. If you are expecting a safe, clean, decent place with a wonderful view and the ambiance of the creek lulling you to sleep and friendly helpful staff, then this definitely is it.

Room Tip: Ask for a creek side room. Awesome sitting on the balcony and later falling asleep to the sound of...

We stayed there end of Aug for several days. Overall clean enough but electrical outlets so worn out couldn't plug anything in. Had a light bulb burned out by sink all week. So much for housekeeping. Had a change of flight plans and requested a refund for 1 unused weekday night. Desk staff felt no problem. Once I left town, you guessed it. Also they charge your credit card the full amount the second you make the reservation. Not the usual practice. Overall you get the impression that money is tight with the deferred maintenance the skimpy breakfast the housekeeper being a teenaged boy with his hat on sideways ( that gave us lots of confidence leaving even basic stuff in our room all right). We visit Idaho springs regularly and will be sure to avoid the Argo Inn

Its safe, comfortable and okay. Our room was large and clean. Everything worked and the breakfast was okay. Considering what you have to select from in Idaho Springs, I would stay there again. Idaho Springs has a very nice old mine to visit and the town has a number of good restaurants to pick from . The hotel is close to most.

Compared to the other motels in Idaho Springs, to me this location seemed to be the best option in the city. But ... was I disappointed!
Room price was very high, actually overpriced.
I had a room facing the river with a balcony, but the room was very dark and old fashioned. Renovation overdue!
Cleanliness was only average. The balcony was really dirty.
The "so-called" breakfast was a joke! Actually, there was NO choice, only Danish, Coffee, OJ. Period!
Yet, front desk crew was very friendly and helpful.

OK, there is no getting around the poor room quality but I have never had a problem in 4 or 5 stays. This is not the place for your romantic getaway with your new girlfriend. She might dump you ASAP. This is also not the place for your picky wife because she may also dump you ASAP. Your mistress will take one look around and will start reconsidering her options. Howevee they do have some nice patios on the river with a couple gas grills at your disposal. They also have a nice little fire pit and they will do smores for the kids at sun down. The Argo is the staff. The front desk is funny and efficient and housekeeping will go the extra mile to take care of you. I keep coming back to the Argo because of the great people and the location is perfect for my needs. Ask for a room in the two story building on the creek.

People at front desk were nice. Room was dark and musty smelling with water stains on the ceiling. Old dank building that badly needs remodeling. "Breakfast" (which is seriously stretching it to call it breakfast) was danishes and juice and coffee, period. No bagels, no toast, no english muffins, no muffins, no cereal.......Bed was pretty comfortable though looked old - bedspreads and blankets need to be replaced. Wifi worked great. IF you stay here, pay more to get one of the newer rooms which lack the musty odor and the allergens.

We stopped at a couple of other places and this hotel looked like the best available. They have a pool and jacuzzi, offer a free continental breakfast and free WIFI, which is hopeless as you can only get a decent signal in the office or near the pool. The desk guy was pretty good and went through the basics. They have a few choices of room and ours was next to the ice/laundry room and was ok. The beds were fine, the shower/bathroom acceptable, parts of the room could be updated. The old fashioned TV was not great and about 15 feet from the bed so you needed a pair of binoculars to watch it. In all this place was no better or worse than the other basic hotels you find scattered around the US. It's not particularly cheap but they have a pool and its on the main road so there are able to justify the little bit extra.

I can't say anything negative about the place but there's no above average features either. They offer discounts on meals elsewhere which we did not take up only because we were very tired. I suppose the only memorable point was the desk clerk who was pretty good and had funny looking eyebrows which we thought were painted on.
