Fishing pressure-Low. That's all that matters to me, I caught Drum, Bass, and Walleye. If you know how to catch fish then go to John martin. The shore is practically inaccessible at most places, which relieves a lot of fishing pressure if you're willing to put in some work. PLEASE take as many white bass as you can, the lake is crowded with them and would produce larger fish if some of those white bass were taken out. If you're big on luxury then don't go! The fish here prefer finesse techniques and jerk baits did not produce in the day or night, but curly tail grubs sure did! The conditions are harsh and the sun is unforgiving. Keeps the crowds away!! Max depth is 60 feet.

I've tent-camped here three times, and plan to return. Too hot and buggy in the summer, but lovely in the fall. An easy (though long) drive from Denver, and a great way to get out of the city for a few days. Beautiful and spacious campsites by the lake, with plenty of trees (Lake Hasty Campground). Restrooms, showers, and laundry facilities. Fun place to try your luck fishing, or hike part of the Santa Fe Trail. Boating on the reservoir itself.

Small store near the park, small grocery store in the little town of Hasty, and about 12 miles east of Las Animas for gas stations, etc. Bent's Fort is close enough to visit for the day, and the larger town of Lamar is approx. 20 miles east of the park.

Nice place for families. Children were riding bikes and enjoying the playground. Small swim beach area open during the summer.

First, the GPS took us 10 miles down a dirt road, to a small part of the lake, then we turned around and finally found the visitors center. We drove around, trying to find a place to fish. There wasn't anyone else fishing, and only saw 1 boat on the water. After inquiring at the visitors center, didn't receive much useful information. Finally left, and never put our poles in the water. Had heard good things about it, but truly wasn't impressed!
