On a recent trip to Grand Lake, we wanted to celebrate our time in beautiful Grand Lake with a meal to remember. We asked several locals for recommendations and noticed The Rapids Lodge Restaurant came up a lot! A stroll slightly off the main street boardwalk brought us to this lovely 1915 historic inn, clinging to the banks of a rushing river. Friendly staff put us at ease and made our evening so very special. With full view of the river and surrounded by lovely woods and antiques, we had the most fabulous meal, including a complementary, fresh shrimp/pate' appetizer tray, soup or salad, and hot bread, in the Lodge's charming, historic setting... The very essence of a fine Rocky Mountain evening out! Lamb Chops with an intriguing fresh blackberry compote...Trout Almondine ...each dish was top notch! Though at first glance it's a bit pricey, it was well worth every penny considering the free delicious appetizer tray, amazing soup or salad, and an incredible setting. What a gem in the Rockies, for sure. The Rapids made our weekend!

We just visited this restaurant and the food was horrible. Two steaks had to be sent back twice and they never did get it right. When the bill came, we were charged $48.00 for an extra steak that we did not order. We ask for the manager and his comment was "i am sure you make mistakes in your business also". No offer of apology or compensation. We have been loyal customers to this establishment over the years but we will NEVER go back! Overpriced and management that does not care!!!

Rapids has potential. It's a nice setting with a great view and was crowded when we arrived at 8pm on a Saturday night. We elected to wait for a window table to come free and so weren't seated until 8.20. No problem for us - other than spending $40 at the bar - but the staff were openly annoyed about this decision which got things off badly.

The food was OK, but frankly you'd expect a lot better for the price and the very pretentious way that the restaurant presents itself. The waitress, like most of the staff, was somewhat aloof and the whole place gives the impression of trying very hard to be an expensive, luxury restuarant and not really pulling it off.

The starter is a set selection of a prawn plate - which was good but not exceptional and either soup or salad. The salad was very basic and the soup - black bean - average at best.

The main courses were pleasant but nothing to write home about and given the fact that the elk medallions tipped the scales at $45 you'd expect a lot better, although that does include the rather uninspired starters. The wine was also rather unpleasant but two of my companions enjoyed it so perhaps that's just my palate.

In addition to the average but expensive food and the rather pretentious service we also felt very rushed with our meal as they wanted to clear the place out by 9pm. Even had we sat down at 8pm one hour for a Saturday evening meal with friends would be very short so to take reservations at 8pm seems odd if they are planning to get rid of you by 9pm.

All in all the four of us were quite disappointed with the meal and experience. It's a nice view and a pleasant restaurant but let down by the rather snooty pretensions which it fails by some distance to live up to.

Every table has a gorgeous view of the river rapids just outside the windows. For visitors to Rocky Mountain National Park, The Rapids is an elegant change of pace from hotdogs over the campfire. Leave your shorts and flipflops in the tent as the attire is "dressy-casual". The Thai pasta in a ginger broth with grilled baby bok choy was excellent--as are the homemade soups, sorbets, dips, and salad dressings. At $34 the New York strip was stingy and unspecial. Try the trout instead.

I really enjoy this restaurant. The food is very good and the atmosphere is wonderful. It is hard to explain but it is one of those places that you just want to linger and have a leisurly dinner/lunch. The setting is beautiful. Go and enjoy yourself!
