“Great value, clean and comfortable”
Reviewed October 10, 2012

Not a great part of town, near the VA hospital... but this old-style motel was clean, comfortable and cheap.. with a real reading chair in the room. The staff was friendly and helpful. I was on a solo motorcycle trip and it was perfect. But had my wife been along, we'd have probably looked for something a little more upscale.

Room Tip: The quiet rooms are away from the street.

I booked this motel because of Trip Advisor reports. Driving down the road I may have never stopped in as the road appearance is a little run down, but inside it was a very nice room at a great price. They have a great TV and they just added DirecTV. As one who has stayed in pet friendly motels where it smells like pet and there is the concern of flees, I was relieved that that don't allow pets. Great clean rooms, WiFi, good price, Thanks TA!

We have stayed in many places this road trip but this has been the best find so far. What a fantastic little motel. Easy check-in (credit cards only !!) - rooms are a good size and super clean, bed is very comfy and we have a large HDTV in our room. You can park just across from your room so it is easy to load and unload. We would stay here again in a heartbeat !!!!

Room Tip: Just stay here !

This is a clean and friendly motel that offers real value for money. The staff couldn't be friendlier and despite being on a main road my room was quiet. Breakfast was basic but still offered good value.

I agree with everything Eric V said about El Palomino and found it an excellent value. I would add that the rooms now have dead bolts. They're shiney-bright and perhaps have been added since his stay in July.

Room Tip: All are first floor. Your choice is morning sun or afternoon sun.

This is not a Hyatt. But, for a value priced motel, it was very clean and remodeled. Unlike other older motels, this place did not stink or smell musky. The mattress seemed newer, the carpet was new, fixtures were new, walls, and tile were all new. The owners are hands-on and really do a good job keeping the place up. No fitness center and no indoor pool. But, I did not pay for a fitness center or indoor pool. I will return!

Room Tip: I understand there may be a couple of rooms that have not yet been remodeled. Bring something to co...

At the moment of writing this review, the El Palomino is ranked #2 in Grand Junction. When we booked a room there based on TA and other review comments, it was #3, but has now “overtaken” the Residence Inn which charges 2.5 times as much as the El Palomino.

Our single king-bedded room (with comfortable mattress) was fitted out with a comfortable chair and love seat, and a task chair and work table. In the back was a small walk-in closet with shelf and hangers for clothes, a midi fridge, microwave, and coffee maker. The bathroom was small but reasonably well fitted out. Outside the rooms are park benches with ash trays for smokers (or anyone who might like to sit outside on a crisp morning or evening). We especially liked the comfortable chair and love seat in the room – as hotel rooms all too often have inadequate truly comfortable seating. This is why we thought of the room as almost a studio apartment.

And this makes it perhaps ironic, but appropriate, that a studio apartment priced at $55/night gets enough appreciative TA reviews to rank the El Palomino above the Residence Inn (at this moment). In terms of value, I would rate the El Palomino as likely #1 in Grand Junction - perhaps #1 in Colorado and neighboring Utah.

Of course, Residence Inns typically have an evening drinks social, and included breakfast. Frankly, with pleasant wineries and brewpubs around this area, I would rather patronize one of those than have industrial beer or wine at a Residence Inn drinks hour. And the El Palomino's breakfast did us very nicely. Coffee, orange juice, cereal, milk, yogurt, fruit, and a selection of danish and other pastries (some fresh, others packaged) were quite adequate for us – and we didn't get bored with the offerings over the 3 nights of our stay. One gets the breakfast from the front office – which is too small for seating areas. But – no problem. Some people sat outside by the pool, others on the park benches placed around the property. We simply carried our breakfasts back to our “apartment” to enjoy them “at home” there.

BTW, we checked a few independent web travel sites, and all wanted more money than did the El Palomino's own Website http://www.elpalominomotel.com . So that's where we booked, with no problems.

We agree with other positive reviews – cleanliness and service were first class.

One recent neutral review claims that there was no security latch on the door. Our room had two locks – one in the knob, and another (a dead bolt). That was sufficient for us.

Is it cute? Nope. Is it cutting-edge 22nd century design? Nope. Is it pushing the envelope on how to make a classic motel, on a classic US highway, more comfortable than most other hotels (again with its comfortable seating) - and great value? Yep.

Can you stay cheaper in Grand Junction? Yes. The El Palomino is located on North Avenue, which in this area is also part of historic highway US6. We saw several classic motels from the mid 20th century along US6 and US50 in town. Many had signs promising the lowest rates in town. One actually posted a rate of $40/night. Another claimed to be “American owned and operated.” That last one was the grubbiest looking motel that we've seen in over a decade. We're not tempted by the looks of those places. We'll stay in a Residence Inn or Embassy Suites if it's the right quality-for-value in a community. In Grand Junction, that “right quality-for-value” for us is the El Palomino.

Room Tip: If you're a light sleeper, you might ask for a room at the back, away from the road. We were ne...
