“Look at (but do not enter) the Trains”
Reviewed September 21, 2013 via mobile

This a fascinating outdoor place where visitors get a close look at railroad locomotives and rolling stock. In addition, there is a large indoor HO model train layout. Touring the museum means you walk around the property on your own and look at the exhibits at your own pace. There are no guides in the outdoor yard. Old steam engines, a variety of freight cars, a few older passenger cars and cabooses await you. There is a pleasant nostalgic atmosphere walking around these old giants. On the down side, there is also a feeling that much of what you see is old broken down junk. It's also disappointing that most of the cars beckon you to climb aboard and explore inside but the majority are locked up and many are behind barriers where you can't even get close. If you like trains and don't expect a thrill a minute, this is a nice place to spend an hour or more.

“Best Train Collection”
Reviewed September 15, 2013

This museum is dedicated to preserving our history of the railroad. Since I was a child I have gone here when we learned about the railroad in Elementary school and my family would go and visit. It is like stepping back into the past and seeing how people traveled before there was automobiles. Some times they do actually run the trains and they have for the kids Thomas the Engine come by for a visit to the museum with his happy face smiling at the children and he can take the children and their families for a ride. My Grandfather had worked on trains when he was a young man during his time working for the coal mine. So I thought that was neat he knew how to work on the trains. I myself have enjoyed riding many trains and learning about them. I would highly recommend this place.

“Only for the most dedicated train buffs”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

The Colorado Railroad Museum has a few interesting things but is limited and even my son and husband who are much more interested in trains than I felt it was overpriced for what was there. There are quite a few restored engines and cars and a great model railroad built by a local club but not worth a special trip. Be aware that it is not for the mobility impaired as there are a few walkways but some of the items are on rails over rather rugged terrain.

“Geared more for kids than adults.”
Reviewed September 10, 2013 via mobile

Interesting collection of locomotives and railcars, but sightlines limited by the size of the property. Riding the galloping goose train is a loop around the property. Probably fun for the kids but really not worth even the extra five bucks for adults (apparently you can't avoid the up charge when the train is running.)

Check out the model train downstairs, a quarter starts some of the trains moving.

“A nice place to visit - But...”
Reviewed September 7, 2013

The Colorado Railroad Museum is an interesting stop and the kids who were there seemed to be having a great time, but if you are a real railroad junky who has visited other major rail museums this one, IMHO, is only average. The collection of engines and rolling stock is quite extensive but information about many of the pieces is only available via smart phone. I was there for several hours and never encountered employees or volunteers who could provide technical or historical information. Also most of the rail cars and engines are not accessible, even the ones with stairs installed were locked up tight.
I would recommend that the CRM spend a few bucks on more informative interpretive plaques for major pieces in the collection (similar to what was done for the Snow Blower Unit), provide some information on the various types of steam locomotives in the collection, provide an interpreter at the roundhouse and demonstrate the turntable several times a day, etc. This would provide a much better educational experience for all.
