Lots of history about the railroad system in Colorado. Lots of train cars to tour. They even have a small train that takes you around the perimeter of the museum grounds.

“After 4 PM they do not charge”
Reviewed September 24, 2012

Lots of rare equipment to look at and the largest rail library in the world. The dispay areas are not paved so watch your step. They could use more information boards discribing the hardware.

“Be prepared to climb!”
Reviewed September 22, 2012

We are train aficionados, actually came to Denver on Amtrak to visit friends, so this was on our list of things we wanted to see. We were not disappointed in the least. I understand that sometimes they have rides, but none were on offer while we were there. However, you can climb up and peer in windows, sometimes even go inside the cars. Good souvenirs in the gift shop--I still have a grandson young enough to be thrilled when he gets mementos of my trips, and I think he's going to like the assortment I sent.
The museum basement has an enormous model train layout, if you have quarters you can activate a train and town (we especially liked the firefighters addressing a blaze at the internal revenue service building) or an amusement park with rides.

“the very best place to go with little boys”
Reviewed September 13, 2012

my boys love this place, and living a couple of miles away, we stop in regularly as members. they are always happy to visit train in gift shop or walk around and climb. grab a coffee, sit on a bench and let your kids go wild. the volunteers are all older men who love trains and what they do. we had a great b-day party in a caboose there too!

“A fabulous hands-on place for train lovers”
Reviewed September 10, 2012

This railroad museum is special because it's a huge yard of old trains that you can touch and climb on. In the basement there's an HO-scale train layout that my kids can watch for a LONG TIME (bring some quarters to make the carousel and other features move!). In the past we have done the Easter train and the Christmas train and look forward to doing them again -- unlimited rides on restored carriages pulled by an actual steam train, and usually candy and face-painting and other things that the kids can enjoy related to the theme.
